What was the first thing Cory Schneider noticed about the Devils’ 2013-14 schedule when it was announced on July 19? “Probably the fact that we’re back in Vancouver pretty quickly” Schneider said today at the U.S. Olympic team’s orientation camp in Arlington Va. In fact the Devils’ visit to Vancouver – the city that was Schneider’s NHL home for the first five seasons of his career – comes in just their fourth game only six days into the season. “I don’t know if the schedule makers are doing me a favor by getting it out of the way early or playing around with me by making me do it so soon” said Schneider who was traded to the Devils in a draft day deal on June 30. “I’m sure it will be a big story in Vancouver but for us it can’t be a distraction. It’s got to be another game.” Having that first game in Vancouver so early – the Canucks visit Prudential Center on Oct. 24 – is fine with Schneider. “Might as well do it early” he said. “I’m not going to put too much into it. I’m moving on. I’m excited to be in Jersey and focused on that. It would be nice to beat them because they’re a good team and it’s a fun building to play in. So I’m looking forward to it.” Schneider knows it’s out of his hands whether he will play in that game at Rogers Arena. That will be head coach Pete DeBoer’s decision. But he’d obviously love to face his old teammates that night. “It would be fun to play in that building” he said. “To come out from the opposite bench and the opposite side will be a little bit different. It would be fun to play in front of those fans again because they were great fans and always treated me very well and I’m sure it would be a compelling story if I did (play). But for me personally I love to play every game.” If DeBoer wants Schneider to play that game it would be a fairly simple decision with it being the back end of a set of back-to-back road games. Martin Brodeur could play the opening game of the five-game road trip the night before in Edmonton setting it up for Schneider to face his former teammates. The game would certainly have some added juice in Vancouver with Schneider going head to head with Roberto Luongo – good friends off the ice but the center of the Canucks’ two-year goaltending soap opera that was finally resolved with Schneider’s trade to the Devils. “It would probably be a big story” Schneider admitted. “You just try and downplay it and go play the game.”
