Detroit Red Wings
The Phoenix Coyotes and Detroit Red Wings have met in the postseason twice in the last three years. Now they're both trying to reach this year's playoffs.
Seeking some much-needed points, the Coyotes will try to build on a win and earn their first victory at slumping Detroit in nearly 2 1/2 years Monday night.
Phoenix (19-17-8) and Detroit (20-16-8) met in a pair of first-round series in 2011 and 2012 with the Red Wings winning both, but the two clubs are currently outside of playoff contention with time running short.
Detroit is attempting to extend a team-record, 21-year postseason run while the Coyotes are trying to make the playoffs for a fourth consecutive time.
"We're just trying to stay alive right now. Guys are working and desperate," Phoenix coach Dave Tippett said. "We need to run the table. If we don't get points in every game, we don't have a chance to make the playoffs. The players are playing accordingly.
"We want to keep ourselves alive going into a huge game against Detroit."
Phoenix helped itself with a 3-2 shootout win at Western Conference-best Chicago on Saturday, ending an 0-1-2 skid. Mike Smith made 36 saves through overtime in his return after missing two games with a lower-body injury. He intends on playing in Phoenix's final four games.
"We're fighting for our lives. That extra point is huge and I think we deserve it," said defenseman David Schlemko, who had the shootout winner.
The Coyotes, 2-0-2 in their last four road games, will next try to come away with two points at Detroit for the first time since Oct. 28, 2010. They've dropped five straight there, including two in the 2011 playoffs.
The Red Wings, though, are 1-2-3 in their last six and 3-5-3 since March 27, a stretch that includes a 4-2 loss in Phoenix on April 4. Detroit is also 1-3-2 in its last six home games, and plays three of its final four at Joe Louis Arena.
"We don't care how our (home) record is now," captain Henrik Zetterberg told the team's website. "We know we got to win games to get into the postseason. Of course, we're happy to be at home than on the road, but we got to go in and focus on Monday."
The Red Wings are averaging 1.73 goals in their last 11 games after registering 2.67 per contest in their first 33 and got their only score in a 2-1 shootout loss in Vancouver on Saturday in the final seconds of the first period.
"We have to find a way to score more goals," coach Mike Babcock said. "We will just continue to work hard."
The teams have split their two games this season, both in Phoenix. Detroit won 3-2 on March 25 with Jonas Gustavsson stopping Lauri Korpikoski's late penalty shot.
Jimmy Howard will likely be in net and he might want to keep a close eye on Martin Hanzal, who has eight goals and an assist in his last eight regular-season games against the Red Wings. He had a goal and an assist in the win earlier this month.
Detroit star forward Pavel Datsyuk's 57 career points versus Phoenix are his most against any opponent outside the Central Division and fourth-most against any team. Datsyuk, though, has just one goal in his last nine regular-season matchups and two goals in his last 11 overall contests.

The bombings at the Boston Marathon hit especially close to home for Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle, who grew up just outside the city and both attended and worked at the event as a teenager. Earlier this week, he took to the ice with "Pray for Boston" written on his skate.
That wasn't enough for him. Yandle said he was hit particularly hard by the death of 8-year...
Following the events of the Boston Marathon bombings, Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle had an inspirational message for his hometown, and five days later he once again is showing the pride of a true Bostonian.
After writing “Pray for Boston” on his skates before Phoenix took on the Sharks on Monday night, Yandle is continuing to honor the place he calls home. Prior to tonight’s...
Dave Tippett has a remarkable talent for distilling complex topics into easily understood sound bites. Mondays postgame offering wasnt award-winning oratory from Phoenixs coach, but it could serve as the working title for this soon-to-be-concluded Coyotes campaign.
Season of frustration, said Tippett, who has been as visibly annoyed as anyone by his inability to find solutions.
The Detroit Red Wings' playoff hopes begin and end with goaltender Jimmy Howard.
It would be nice if one of Detroits skilled forwards suddenly regained his goal-scoring touch, which would take some of the burden off of Howard.
But realistically, which forward seems ready to step up and be a goal-scoring machine?
Except for Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, there isnt another...
From We All Bleed Red on YouTube, Red Wings GM Ken Holland spoke to the CBC's Scott Oake and Craig Simpson on After Hours, and the interview's worth watching:
Due to a nasty bug I've been out of the loop for a couple of days, and during that time, the Grand Rapids Griffins learned who they'll be playing in the first round of the AHL playoffs. The Griffins' PR department reports that Grand Rapids will battle the Houston Aeros in a best-of-five series which will commence on Friday, April 26th:

Jimmy Howard made 34 saves and Johan Franzen continued his late season surge as the Wings took another step towards the playoffs with a 4-0 over the Phoenix Coyotes Monday night from the Joe.

Red Wings blank the Coyotes, as Jimmy Howard pulls up his 4th shutout this season, winning 4-0 and pulling up 2 completely crucial points. The Red Wings finally came out in a game and played like a team who’s season is on the verge of ending. While generating very little in the area [...]
The Grand Rapids Griffins are headed to the playoffs for the first time since 2009 after clinching their first division title since 2006. The Griffins, the Detroit Red Wings’ AHL affiliate, hold the No. 3 seed in the postseason and will take on the sixth-seeded Houston Aeroes in a best-of-five.
Here’s the schedule for that matchup:

CHICAGO (AP) -- Mikkel Boedker and David Schlemko scored shootout goals to lift Phoenix to a 3-2 victory over Chicago on Saturday night, snapping the Coyotes' three-game losing streak and preserving their fading playoff hopes.

Thursday April 25th will mark the end of a an era for the Nashville Predators. Next season's realignment will move the Detroit Red Wings to an inferior "Conference II" in the Eastern time zones where they will rekindle some of their own old rivalries. Us Pred fans though will lose the biggest rival this franchise has ever seen. I would like to take some time to say...
The Red Wings scrum up a big point, but also drop another, as they drop the game 2-1 to the Canucks in a shootout. Shot blocking and defensive pressure were the stories of this game. Each team had very few shots on goal through each period. The scoring wasn’t opened till 12:15 of [...]

The Detroit Red Wings at least nudged a little closer to the Columbus Blue Jackets and kicked off a stretch of four crucial games (with three remaining, against LA on Wednesday, Nashville on Thursday and in Dallas on Saturday) on the right foot via a 4-0 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday night, a game in which the Wings' power play, goaltending and positional and/or...
