The Pittsburgh Penguins and Sidney Crosby are putting the finishing touches on a new contract that will pay Crosby $104.4 million over 12 years.

The Penguins announced the deal Thursday on their website. The contract will pay an average of about $8.7 million a season, although Crosby will receive more money in the early years of the deal. The new contract would go into effect for the 2013-14 season.

Crosby is not having any concussion-related problems and for the first time in many years is having normal summer workouts. CBC reported in early June that a 10-plus-year deal was in the works.

His summer workouts were cut short in 2008 and 2009 because the Penguins played into June. Also, he was fatigued in 2010 following the Olympics and the Penguins playing two playoff rounds.

“Sidney wanted to be a Penguin forever,” said Pat Brisson, Crosby’s agent, according to the Penguins website. “He went to this franchise when the franchise was at the bottom. He was part of the build up. He is emotionally attached to the fans, the city of Pittsburgh and the organization.”
