St. Louis Blues captain David Backes was ejected from Friday night's game at Joe Louis Arena after receiving a match penalty for allegedly delivering an illegal hit to the head of Detroit Red Wings defenseman Kent Huskins. However, it would appear that the Blues got the short end of a horrendous call by NHL referees Chris Lee and Ian Walsh, as replay clearly shows Backes hit Huskins in the chest and not the head. The call came at a critical time of the game, with the score tied at 3-3 and 10:22 remaining in the third period. The Red Wings scored on the ensuing power play and won the game 5-3. Seems like a terrible call to us and probably should have been reviewed by the officials on the ice. MSG network's Al Trautwig probably would have had this to say: H/T Puck Daddy. The Backes call was terrible. Huskins was injured, and the Wings took the PP, but it was terrible

As noted in the quick take, and as just about any Red Wings fan will tell you, the penalty assessed to St. Louis Blues David Backes for what was most assuredly a hard and was probably an intent-to-injure hit on Red Wings defenseman Kent Huskins--who did leave the game, and does have an "upper-body injury," according to Helene St. James and Ansar Khan--may have been the...

Ugly - Officials blow late call on David Backes

The year is young, yet it already has been an ugly season for NHL officiating. Across the league fans are complaining about the inconsistent and extremely ticky-tacky calls officials are making. Nudge a player in pursuit of the puck? Prepare to sit. Get mauled by a defender? Play on. The officials in the St. Louis Blues / Detroit Red Wings game on Friday took things to a whole...

Backes levels former teammate Huskins

St. Louis Blues center David Backes is known as a physical player across the league. A player that plays the game the right way with tenacity, grit and aggression. Backes, the Blues' captain and top-line centerman, played a physical game against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night in a 5-3 loss on the road. Unfortunately, the refs thought Backes may have been too physical...

David Backes hit on Kent Huskins

This was the hit that St. Louis Blues forward David Backes put on Detroit Redwings defenseman Kent Huskins. Backes was given a five minute major and match penalty. In looking at the video it doesn't look like Backes even hit Huskins in the head. What do you think?

Blues place Halak on injured reserve

St. Louis Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak was placed on injured reserve on Sunday because of a groin injury, and the team will call up Jake Allen from AHL Peoria. Halak is expected to miss at least two games, and Brian Elliott will be the Blues goalie in those games, according to NHL.com. Halak apparently was injured on Henrik Zetterberg's breakaway goal at the end of the Blues...

St. Louis Blues: Is David Backes the most important player on the Blues?

During Friday night's 5-3 loss to the Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues center and captain David Backes was issued a five minute major and a game misconduct for a hit to the head of Red Wings' defenseman Kent Huskins. The hit by Backes was likely clean and the Blues gave up the game-winning goal on the ensuing penalty. While Backes made headlines because of a huge hit thatÂ...

Explain this penalty, Brendan Shanahan

David Backes earned a match penalty for hitting his old teammate Kent Huskins in the head. Even the Detroit Red Wings broadcasters were incredulous. Maybe Brendan Shanahan can uncover the illegal hit with a frame-by-frame breakdown. We'll await that with great eagerness.
