I put this clip in the quick take, but I'm guessing that it probably deserves its own thread. I hope that the NHL doesn't call Red Wings forward Johan Franzen for this, because Franzen was assessed a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for spearing David Perron after Perron absolutely mashed Franzen's head into the glass via a "hit the numbers" check from behind. Mind you, I'm a biased Wings fan, and this video--from Paul--is narrated by the Blues' announcers, but Perron got 2 minutes, Franzen got 5, and that should be the end of it.

Red Wings’ Johan Franzen spears Blues’ David Perron (VIDEO)

With the Red Wings having Thursday’s game pretty much in hand (up 4-1) with eight minutes left in the third period, Johan Franzen thought it was the apropos time to take a shot at Blues winger David Perron. Usually in hockey, “taking a shot” amounts to running a guy with his head down or giving a guy a nice two-hander with the stick.  Franzen’s definition of “taking a...

Johan Franzen receives match penalty and is ejected for spearing David Perron

This was an extremely stupid thing for Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen to do.  I understand he was upset that St. Louis Blues forward David Perron hit him when his back was turned, but that is still no excuse for turning around and spearing Perron right in the midsection.  Perron was already going to be assessed a boarding penalty for the hit on Franzen and went to the...

NHL decides that 5 and a game misconduct was enough punishment for Johan Franzen

I may be one of five people who had no problem with Red Wings forward Johan Franzen spearing David Perron after Perron smashed Franzen's face into the boards (since Franzen suffered a subdural hematoma after being concussed against the Colorado Avalanche in 2008, and you may remember how Gary Roberts welcomed Franzen back by punching him in the face repeatedly), especially as...

Blues Turn Their Attention To The Video

from Norm Sanders of the News-Democrat, Asked what he might have done 10 years ago following a pair of lopsided home defeats like the St. Louis Blues suffered through this week, coach Ken Hitchcock showed how he has evolved. "We probably would have done different things today," Hitchcock said Friday after putting the team through an informative video session highlighting...

Mrazek and the role players come up big in Wings’ 5-1 win over Blues

All of a sudden that 6-0 opening season loss to the Blues seems like a long time ago. Thursday night the Wings defeated St. Louis 5-1 behind an impressive performance by rookie goaltender Petr Mrazek and the third and fourth lines. Mrazak who made his first career NHL start for a resting Jimmy Howard turned away 26 shots in the win while looking extremely confident between the pipes...

Blues downed by Red Wings

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Petr Mrazek made 26 saves in his NHL debut, leading the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night. Detroit halted a two-game skid with its second win in three tries against St. Louis this season. The Blues, who beat Detroit 6-0 on Jan. 19, dropped their third in a row. They have lost three successive games in regulation for...

Ducks-Blues Preview

St. Louis Blues coach Ken Hitchcock is wondering where the team effort that helped his club get off to a solid start has gone in the last few games. Looking back on their recent home matchups with the Anaheim Ducks may provide some inspiration. St. Louis looks to end a three-game losing streak Saturday night by earning a sixth straight home victory over Anaheim, which is coming...

Red Wings-Blues wrap-up and overnight report: depth, grit and Mrazek frustrate the Blues

The Detroit Red Wings flew back to Metro Detroit to greet anywhere from 2-6 inches of snow a little less encumbered by concerns about their team's trajectory after defeating the St. Louis Blues 5-1 on Thursday, giving the Wings a 2-and-1 record in what will be a four-game series with the Blues as of next Wednesday's meeting, and righting the Wings' ship with the Edmonton...

Wings help double Calgary’s win total this season with 4-1 loss

A slow start and uninspiring finish led to the Wings dropping another another game against a team they should have beaten and Calagary doubling their win total on the season. After scoring a total of nine goals in two games against Dallas and St. Louis, the Wings’ offense has all of a sudden gone silent Saturday night in Columbus falling 4-2 and tonight against the Flames 4-1....
