The ninth edition of my prospect profile series examines the latest Red Wing to get re-signed: Landon Ferraro. Center – Canada – Age 22 6-foot, ~180 pounds – Shoots Right-handed Drafted 32nd overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft Career Stats (Regular Season Only) Strengths / Weaknesses + Speed, Hockey Awareness, Ray Ferraro - Strength, Capitalizing on Scoring Chances Landon Ferraro relies heavily on his instincts to position himself in the right places at the right time with his speed and quickness catching the eyes of scouts in his junior playing days with Red Deer Rebels and Everett Silvertips. However, since joining to the Grand Rapids Griffins, his speed hasn’t given him the type of advantage he saw when playing against WHL’s opponents. The faster paced AHL game has seen him fall back on his high hockey IQ and father’s work ethic to stay productive. The shortlist of improvements that need to be made for Ferraro to make the next step include becoming a more consistent threat on the offense by finishing off scoring chances and bulking up to win more critical one-on-one battles. It’s a work a progress, but he is slowly running out of time. He recently signed a 1-year, two-way contract extension having completed his third season with Griffins this past spring. Former Red Wing Valtteri Filppula is a very high bench mark for Ferraro to aim for. NHL Comparisons Maxime Talbot (Colorado Avalanche) Valtteri Filppula (Tampa Bay Lightning) Darren Helm (Detroit Red Wings) From a size, speed, and talent perspective these three guys match the type of game Ferraro could bring to table when fully developed. There are three flaws in making the comparisons between these skaters and Ferraro. They all shoot left-handed. They all have better offensive game than I expect Landon to reach. They all have around 20 more pounds of muscle to throw around. The first point doesn’t have any impact, but points 2 and 3 are the reason why Ferraro is struggling to make and then stay in the NHL. Evaluations RedWingsCentral.com: #12 rated Red Wings’ prospect Hockey’sFuture.com: Potential 3rd or 4th line forward Spot on. Not much to add really except Ferraro is on a short leash. These evaluations will either hold true or fall flat by the end of this season. Next Season As mentioned before Landon Ferraro recently signed a 1-year, two-way contract and will get his opportunity to make the Red Wings’ roster coming out of preseason training camp. The odds are he isn’t going to make it with Pavel Datsyuk, Stephen Weiss, Darren Helm, and Riley Sheahan filling up the 4 center positions. This will force him to start the season in Grand Rapids, but because it’s his 4th season in the AHL he is not exempt from waivers. Meaning if Ferraro is eventually called up to the Wings during the season he can’t be sent back down to Griffins without the other 29 NHL teams getting the chance to pick him up on waivers. If anything this will be an interesting scenario to watch unfold as the season progresses.
