Game 59 – Three Observations Heading Into the Penguins-Canadiens Game

By: Casey Johnston (@CaseyR82) Trust In Maatta If there was any doubt left about the maturity of Olli Maatta the Olympic Games should have dispelled them.  As one of only five Finnish defensemen in the NHL, it was a safe bet that Maatta would have to shoulder his fair share of the defensive responsibility in Sochi.  The 19 year old came through with three goals and two assists...

Olli Maatta continues stellar rookie season

Whatever it is, Olli Maatta has it. Speed?  Check.  Hands? Check. Hockey Sense? Double-check.  At only 19, Maatta already looks poised to develop into the National Hockey League’s next great puck-moving defenseman.  In fact, I don’t think the Penguins have had a prospect look so poised and NHL-ready in his first year since Sidney Crosby was a rookie in 2005-2006. Maatta has...

Pens Make Maatta a Healthy Scratch – Sign of Things to Come?

(Justin K. Aller/Getty Images) Olli Maatta will be a healthy scratch today when the Penguins play the New Jersey Devils. It would make sense if the scratch is nothing more than a temporary change made simply to give Maatta a rest.  He’s halfway through his first experience of what a grind the NHL schedule can be.  He leads the team in blocked shots with 72.  Thanks to the recent...

Pittsburgh Penguins’ Olli Maatta making name for himself

At the beginning of the season, Pittsburgh invited two young defensemen, Olli Maatta and Derrick Pouliot, to training camp this year to see how they would fair with some of Pittsburgh’s better defensemen. Who Is Olli Maatta And Why Is He So Awesome? by @LCJS

Olli Maatta is a rookie. Taken by the Penguins with their 2nd pick (22nd overall) in the 1st round of the 2012 Entry Draft, one may think that Derrick Pouliot (8th overall) would be the player getting first crack at the NHL. Watching Maatta play, however, will quell that thought. Maatta could have been taken by the Pens in that 8th spot and nobody would have batted an eye...
