After a 7-2 defeat to the Montreal Canadians on Wednesday night, the Detroit Red Wings’ seven game win streak was ended.  The blowout at the hands of Montreal brought the Wings back down to earth, and will leave a bitter taste in the players’ mouths this All-Star break.

The Red Wings fell behind early in this one, with the Canadians pouring in four first period goals.  The Wings found themselves down 4-0 at the first intermission, and goaltender Jimmy Howard was pulled after the first 20 minutes after stopping just 8 of the 12 shots he faced.  Unfortunately for Detroit, backup goalie Ty Conklin was unable to give the Wings a spark, and immediately allowed two goals on the first two shots he faced.

Down 6-0 less than five minutes into the second period, the Wings were out of it before they could gain any sort of momentum.

Head coach Mike Babcock said that this game won’t be haunting his nightmares over the All-Star break.

“I’m not going to watch any video of this, at all,” Babcock said. “I’m going to have a drink.  Actually, (that) is what I’m going to do.”

Sometimes a stiff drink is the only way to get past a tough loss like this one, a loss that is the Red Wings’ second worst of the year and their worst since way back in October.

While the Red Wings were clearly outplayed by a struggling (11th place in the Eastern Conference) team in Montreal, it isn’t the end of the world for Detroit fans.  The Red Wings still lead the NHL with 67 points- a very respectable number in 50 games.  Also, the Red Wings’ franchise-record 17-game home winning streak is still alive.  All is not lost for Detroit, although this win does sting a bit going into the break.

On another positive note, Wings fans will be able to watch two of their very own this weekend during the All-Star game in Ottawa.  Pavel Datsyuk and Jimmy Howard will represent Detroit this year, and so far the pair have already represented well.  Datsyuk was selected first overall by team Chara, despite team captain Zdeno Chara having numerous Boston teammates to select from.  Howard was also taken by team Chara in the 10th round (of 19 total rounds).

Chara had nice things to say about Datsyuk after making his selection saying “he plays the game the right way” and “he does magic on the ice.”

Howard was relieved to be on Datsyuk’s team, saying “I’m glad I’m with Pavel.  I wouldn’t want to face him in this sort of game.”

The Red Wings now will enjoy the weekend off until they come back on Tuesday to face a road game against Calgary.
