The Detroit Red Wings may set their sights on Phoenix defenseman Derek Morris, following Jay Bouwmeester’s trade from Calgary to St. Louis. That’s what ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun speculated in his “Rumblings” blog on Tuesday morning, one day before the NHL’s trade deadline. According to LeBrun, the Wings were very much in the mix for Bouwmeester, “but, in the end, they didn’t get him because they didn’t include a first-round pick.” The Wings, as you might recall, dealt away a first-rounder last year to acquire Kyle Quincey from Colorado. But with Bouwmeester off the board, LeBrun believes Detroit might set its sights elsewhere on the blue line. Morris, with one year remaining on his contract at just south of $3 million, has a no-trade clause that allows him to be dealt to one of only eight approved teams. Per LeBrun: I believe Detroit is among the eight teams on that list and that could be intriguing after the Red Wings lost out on Jay Bouwmeester. Morris has 10 assists and a minus-7 rating in 30 games this season. The Red Wings already signed free-agent rookie defenseman Dan DeKeyser out of Western Michigan, and he could make his debut some time this week. Adding Morris to the mix would further push Detroit into an overloaded situation at defense — possibly clearing the way for the Wings to move another of their current corps, as they did by shooting Kent Huskins to Philadelphia for a conditional seventh-rounder.
