Stephen Gionta went skates-first into the boards on a Dion Phaneuf check with 6:44 remaining in the second period Friday night. The Devils’ center stayed down and then rose very slowly before being helped off the ice by Anton Volchenkov and trainer Rich Stinziano.
Gionta did return early in the third period.
“Feet first. I kind of rolled the (right) ankle going in,” Gionta said. “It didn’t feel so good. I was able to get back out there, which was good.”
Defenseman Eric Gelinas, hit in the left ankle by a Scott Hartnell shot with 9:08 left in Thursday night's game in Philadelphia, was able to play after testing it the pregame skate.
