The Hurricanes received some terrible, but unsurprising, news yesterday that defenseman Joni Pitkanen could miss the start of the year, as he has not fully recovered from a heel injury he sustained late last season. This isn't a shocker considering how gruesome the injury looked, but not having him in the lineup is a huge blow to the Hurricanes. Pitkanen typically plays more minutes per game than any other defender, but that alone isn't why he will be missed. A month ago, I talked about how Pitkanen was the only true "puck-mover" on the Hurricanes blue-line and how superior he was at driving the play forward compared to the rest of the defense corps. He adds another dimension to the Hurricanes breakout game and forecheck, which is going to be tough to replace because no other defenseman on the team really has that ability. Long-term, Ryan Murphy should be the guy that slides into Pitkanen's role but right now, the Canes don't really have a puck-mover who ...

from Luke DeCock of the News & Observer,
The apparent lack of progress with Joni Pitkanen’s shattered heel is awful news for the Carolina Hurricanes in so many ways. It’s hard to pick just one: The minutes he plays; the all-around role the defenseman can fill when at his best; the fact that the needless injury, suffered on a meaningless icing play, has the potential...
The Canes likely will be without defenseman Joni Pitkanen when the upcoming season begins.

We have to keep an eye on how much cap room we have. So theres a little more priority for a defenseman, Rutherford said. Our...

It has been a news intense week for the Carolina Hurricanes heading into the start of training camp next week.
Yesterday, it was revealed that Joni Pitkanen is behind schedule in his heel injury recovery is not skating and seemingly does not have any kind of certain schedule for playing. The quotes from Canes GM Jim Rutherford have seemed to become more negative each time he...

I would have loved to have done a full report on the Baby Ranger's game against the Carolina Hurricanes at Traverse City but there wasn't any live audio or video of the game. The Rangers either by choice or by NHL edict are not showing the games of Traverse City after doing so in the past.
If it is a decision that the Rangers made then once...
