Michael Cammalleri had just finished logging 22:31 of icetime, collisions, cross-checks, slashes, and all the other workplace hazards that are impossible to avoid in an NHL contest. Easy. At least, it is compared to his recent stint on the Calgary Flames’ injured list. “The culture that the coaching staff is building here is — no matter if you’re injured or you’re playing — you’re working really, really hard. In fact, when you’re injured, you’re probably working twice as hard,” said Cammalleri, who missed a chunk of training camp and the first seven games of the new season due to an injury to his hand/wrist area. “There’s no let-up that way. It wasn’t always easy for five weeks, coming here at 6:30 in the morning and working your butt off for a few hours. “But they make sure you do it and you’re better off for it.” The Flames are better off with Cammalleri back in the lineup. In fact, the 31-year-old left-winger has been a point-per-game guy since returning to the fold, registering three goals and three helpers in a half-dozen outings, including a three-point effort last weekend against the Washington Capitals and one assist in Friday’s 4-3 loss to the Detroit Red Wings at the Saddledome. Heading into Sunday’s date with the defending champion Chicago Blackhawks in the Windy City (5:30 p.m., Sportsnet West, Sportsnet Fan 960), Jiri Hudler is the only other Flames forward who has generated as much offence during that six-game span. “And I think (Cammalleri) could have a ton more,” pointed out linemate TJ Galiardi. “He’s a great leader, and he’s just saying ‘Stick with it.’ “We had a ton of chances again (Friday) and just couldn’t find the back of the net. It’s fun to play with a guy like that who always is positive. “If we just stick with it, we’re going to get more results.” Galiardi is right. Truth is, Cammalleri probably could have notched a hat-trick in Friday’s home loss to the Red Wings.
