Lots of players get traded. But no one could possibly know how Ladislav Smid feels, being traded from the Edmonton Oilers to the dastardly Calgary Flames. Well, except for one guy. And one guy only. Steve Staios did the inaugural north-to-south transfer when he was shipped to the Flames at the 2010 deadline. Meaning Smid’s support group is one person strong. “I actually talked to Steve Staios yesterday — he was giving me some tips,” Smid, chuckling, said Sunday morning after his first practice with the Flames. “It’s crazy. Calgary and Edmonton don’t make deals very often. Kinda weird (wearing the Flaming C), but it’s just a mindset. I’m very happy to be here.” And what tips did Staios offer? “He said, ‘Don’t think about it too much — just embrace it,’ “ replied Smid. “It’s good to be in a new city. A fresh and new start. He also told me I’m really going to enjoy it here. It’s a great city and the fans are amazing here.” The day after Friday’s swap, Smid had travelled from Philadelphia to Calgary, via Toronto, before settling into his temporary digs — a downtown hotel — for some much-needed shut-eye. “I barely slept last night,” said Smid. “It was just thinking, a little bit nervous (about) meeting new guys and going into a different organization. Everyone was so nice, so supportive — they make it really easy for me. “We’ll see how fast I adapt. I hope it doesn’t take long.” At practice, Smid, wearing No. 3, skated with Derek Smith. Other pairs included the established Kris Russell-Dennis Wideman duo, as well as T.J. Brodie and Chris Butler, Shane O’Brien and Chris Breen (who, for the first time since injuring his abdomen, practised with the club).
