He signed hats. He signed jerseys. During the Calgary Flames’ week-long development camp, sixth-overall pick Sean Monahan signed almost everything but an entry-level deal with the club. “It’s not a worry, I don’t think,” Monahan said after Tuesday’s final on-ice session at WinSport’s Markin MacPhail Centre. “I want to earn it. I haven’t really done anything with the organization yet, other than this camp. “Obviously, if I’m able to sign, that would be nice, but I want to earn that contract.” It’s not a matter of if, just when. Monahan might be saying all the right things, but the Flames wouldn’t have called his name with the sixth pick in the 2013 NHL Draft if he hadn’t already proved he deserved a deal. In fact, all five skaters selected before Monahan — Nathan MacKinnon (Colorado Avalanche), Aleksander Barkov (Florida Panthers), Jonathan Drouin (Tampa Bay Lightning), Seth Jones (Nashville Predators) and Elias Lindholm (Carolina Hurricanes) — have already put their signature on entry-level pacts, and it shouldn’t be long before the Flames finalize a deal with their (fingers crossed) first-line centre of the future. “We’ll work on that this week,” Flames GM Jay Feaster told reporters Tuesday. “I had a conversation with his agent last week and we agreed that we would talk at the end of the development camp. “When you look at it, the entry-level deals are typically not that difficult to get done, so we’ll get about that.”
