It’s not uncommon for rival teams to add a little spice to their competition. Take the Red Sox, for example, who typically play a bulk of their Spring Training games against their Fort Myers, FL. cross-town rival Minnesota Twins just six miles down the road. Whichever team wins the most head-to-head matchups takes home the Mayor’s Cup. While winning the Cup doesn’t mean much more than bragging rights, it undoubtedly sells tickets. Enter: Florida, where the Panthers and Lightning, bottom feeders in the Eastern Conference of the NHL, want fans to go their games. In a market where the only other place fans see ice is in their soft drinks (and many of those “fans” came to Florida to escape ice and the cold that comes with it in the first place), the cross-state rivals have developed a new competition to engage fans: the Governor’s Cup. A new initiative, the Cup will be presented to whichever team takes home the best head-to-head record. Both teams will provide donations to its rival’s y...

Tim Thomas (groin) doesn’t think he’ll be out long

According to Florida Panthers head coach Kevin Dineen, Panthers goalie Tim Thomas may or may not be placed on injured reserve later today. If he were to go to the IR, it would mean he would be out of the lineup for at least a week. This stemming from the groin injury he suffered against the Flyers earlier this week. Per George Richards of the Miami Herald, the 39 year old Thomas...

Huizenga joins Viola to christen new Panthers era before 6-3 win over Pens

The Panthers chose an odd way to raise the curtain on the Vinnie Viola era Friday night with a tease. With anticipation building the air was momentarily sucked out of the BB&T Center by the announcement that the new $4.2 million scoreboard would not be functioning for the night due to technical difficulties. Boos echoed through the arena. Ah but it was all a joke. Lights began...

Tim Thomas injury could delay matchup against Boston Bruins

Photo By Mark BucknerOn the calender hanging in my kitchen, Thursday October 17th has been circled in red magic marker since the Florida Panthers announced they had signed two-time Vezina trophy winner Tim Thomas to a one-year contract. Now, it looks like that forged doctor's note I got from a back-alley "doctor" in Lawrence to get out of work that day is completely...

It's easy to laugh at this. As the two outcasts in the Flortheast division, the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning more than likely aren't going to be contenders for the Stanley Cup this season. The pretty stacked Atlantic Division has the Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins, who are two early favorites this year. The Panthers and Lightning shouldn't worry,...
