The Philadelphia Flyers played a solid first period on Tuesday night, and then, quite simply, got their asses handed to them the rest of the way. The New Jersey Devils went on to defeat the listless Flyers by a final score of 4-1, evening up their semifinal conference series.

The Flyers came out and played well early in the first period and jumped out to an early lead in front of a raucous Philly crowd when rookie Matt Read deposited his 3rd goal of the playoffs. Things seemed to be going well, but it was all down hill from there.

The Flyers did not manage a shot on goal in the 2nd stanza until the 18:45 mark, and were out hustled and outgunned. Somehow though, they clung to a 1-0 lead heading into the 3rd period thanks to the stellar play of Ilya Bryzgalov.

After the break, you’d think the Flyers would come out with a point to make in the final period, but unless that point was horrendous and sloppy play, they fell WAY short of the mark.

The New Jersey Devils scored 4 goals on the road in a playoff game for the first time in their history, and the Flyers appeared to be too enamored with their own success to pay attention.

Their heads were not in the game and the Flyers sat back and let the Devils embarrass them. The Flyers played undisciplined hockey, took dumb penalties and played right into the boring game of the New Jersey Devils.

The Flyers appeared to have bought into the hype that has had them the sexy pick to win the Stanley Cup recently after they dispatched the Pittsburgh Penguins. Apparently the Flyers stopped to admire themselves in the mirror and forgot to actually show up and play hockey.

I won’t go into the specifics of who scored what for the Devils, because it really doesn’t matter. The bottom line is that the Flyers played suspect defense, if you could even call it that, and hung their goaltender out to dry. It was a pathetic showing that needs to rectified immediately.

With the series tied at 1, the setting will change to the dump that is Newark, New Jersey. The series resumes on Thursday at 7:30 PM. Knock this!Similar Posts:
