The Philadelphia Flyers were coming off of their big victory against the Winnipeg Jets and were looking to add two more points to their record as they hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Wells Fargo Center tonight. It was the return of the James van Riemsdyk to Philadelphia. The crowd game him a warm, Philadelphia welcome during the introductions as well as during pre-game warmups. The crowd was pumped and the Wells fargo Center was bumping. The Flyers came out very strong in the first period, which is something that has not been seen much this season. The starting line of forwards Zac Rinaldo, Sean Couturier, and Max Talbot were applying the pressure with hits early. Danny Briere was denied in front by Maple Leafs goalie Ben Scrivens after a beautiful move to dangle around the defenseman in front of the net. Two minutes later, the Flyers received their first power play opportunity of the night after Dion Phaneuf interfered with Jakub Voracek during an offensive rush. After 55 seconds of power play time, Wayne Simmonds was called for roughing, which ended the Flyers man-advantage very early. As soon as his penalty ended, Simmonds received a pass out of the box from Couturier. Simmonds was all alone on the breakaway but Scrivens went into a split to record a huge save for the Leafs, keeping the game scoreless. Zac Rinaldo continued his recent, great play by drawing a penalty on Mike Brown for roughing. The Flyers did not record a chance on their second power play of the night. After Brayden Schenn was held on the ground with no penalty being called, Tye McGinn dropped the gloves with Brown. McGinn was dropped to the ice after a great fight, but the Flyers could not gain momentum. In fact, the Maple Leafs scored three minutes after. Phil Kessel scored a easy goal as he went around Kimmo Timonen and put the puck past Bryzgalov. The first period ended with the Flyers trailing by one goal. The second period had a different than the previous 20 minutes. The Flyers offense, though not getting a lot of shots early, were applying pressure in the Maple Leafs zone. The Flyers had two consecutive power play chances as Phaneuf went to the box for a crosscheck and Mark Fraser went out for tripping.  The Flyers only mustered up one shot in front of the net but could not capitalize. Timonen was called for a trip and headed to the box. The Flyers killed off the short power play but a minute later, Nikolai Kulemin netted a breakaway goal from Nazem Kadri and Carl Gunnarsson. The remainder of the period was very boring and slow until Scott Hartnell netted his first goal of the season off of assists from Voracek and Claude Giroux. The goal occurred in the final two minutes and was huge for the momentum swing for the rest of the game. The Flyers again came out with a lot of pressure at the start of the third period. A small scrum in front of the net resulted in two good chances for the Flyers but they could not put one home. The Flyers were very mess with the puck and could not clear their defensive zone at some points.  Talbot took a bad hooking penalty and gave the Maple Leafs another power play. As soon as the man advantage ends, Mikhail Grabovski netted his 6th goal of the season from Clarke MacArthur and Kadri. As the period progressed, the Flyers continued to look slow, warn out, and just unmotivated. JVR then took a double minor, which gave the Flyers a 4-min power play. Voracek netted his 8th goal of the season, putting the Flyers down by a goal. Voracek, after being named the number one NHL Star Of The Week, followed up with a two-point performance, giving him 24 on the season. But the Flyers could not muster up another goal for the rest of the game. Jay McClement recorded an empty-net goal and the Maple Leafs defeated the Flyers 4-2. The Flyers put on a lot of pressure towards the end of the period but could not get anything to go in.  The Flyers will host the Washington Capitals on Wednesday, February 27th at the Wells Fargo Center.
