The Philadelphia Flyers have lost two straight games against the New Jersey Devils and now trail in their playoff series 2-1. The teams will have an extra day off before Game 4 on Sunday, May 6.

As a Flyers fan, I feel like the extra day off couldn’t have come at a better time for this team. As ugly as things have been lately, the Flyers are still only a few seconds away from leading the series. An extra day of preparation could be just what they need.

Here are a few reasons why the Flyers will benefit:

They can recharge the batteries

Philadelphia has looked really flat for the bulk of this series. The Flyers were awful in Game 2, and things weren’t much better in Game 3. The team showed signs of life in overtime, so that is something it can build from. I have no doubt that Peter Laviolette is going to make sure that this team chases every puck in the next game. The more distance that the Flyers can put between these losses, the better things will be. This team looked very tired in the last game. They won’t have that excuse with the extra day.

They can get healthy

The Flyers really missed Sean Couturier in the last game. The young forward was knocked out of the game during the first period with a lower body injury and did not return. There aren’t a lot of details about the injury, but Couturier is said to have a cut on his leg and is doing okay. That could mean that he is back for Game 4. He has been one of the best defensive forwards on the team, so that is great news. The extra day off will increase the chances that he is ready to go.

The new lines can gel

After the offense failed to show up in Game 2, Laviolette made some changes in Game 3. Jaromir Jagr joined a line with rookies Matt Read and Brayden Schenn. Jakub Voracek took his spot on Claude Giroux’s line. Will the new lines remain for Game 4, or will the coach shake things up again? Either way, there will be more time to prepare. Philadelphia needs the lines to be cohesive so that it can keep the attack going. A little more practice will only help.
