Claude Giroux scored 14 points in the Penguins series. He will need to continue to be the leader of this Flyers team in round 2.

The Philadelphia Flyers handled the Pittsburgh Penguins in 6 games of an intense, physical, shoot-out kind of series. It was wild, wooly and incredibly entertaining. I would be very surprised if this Flyers-Devils series that kicks off at 3 PM this afternoon even briefly resembles that series.

The New Jersey Devils are an opportunistic bunch that play very tight defense. The Devils will create opportunities, usually take advantage of them and then rely on their defense and goaltending to tighten the game down. It’s how they’ve played for years. And the man that they still rely on to keep the puck out of the net hasn’t changed in years either. Sure hall of famer Martin Brodeur still patrols the crease for these Devils.

At 39, Brodeur may not be what he was in his heyday, but he is still a top-notch goaltender that knows how to keep the puck out of the net. He has been here before, and he knows what it takes to win. He’s done it. Time and again.

And don’t forget that this Devils team is in Round 2 because of a double-overtime Game 7 win over the Florida Panthers on Thursday. The kind of emotional lift and momentum that a win like that gives you could certainly carry over into the early part of this series.

The Flyers, on the other hand, have had 7 days since they last played a game. That is a full week off from game action. The Flyers have practiced, but we all know that practice is a whole different animal than being in a game.

The Flyers have been bitten by slow starts, as recently as the Pens series. While they may have been able to overcome one, two and three goal deficits in that series, as I have been saying forever now, falling behind and playing less than 60 minutes of hockey are not sound strategies for winning playoff hockey and ultimately the Stanley Cup.

The Flyers will have to find the energy to shake off the rust and to get going early in Game 1. It is imperative. While the Pens were leaky enough defensively to allow the Flyers back in, this Devils team is not.

Another key to this matchup will be special teams. The Devils have a way of frustrating offenses. Frustration can sometimes lead to a lack of discipline. These Flyers need to stay focused and out of the penalty box. Conversely, if the Flyers can get a few chances on the power play, it will come against a team that has struggled on the Penalty Kill in these playoffs. The Panthers managed to score 8 power play goals on 26 tries against the Devils. The Flyers scored at will on the power play against the Pens. The Devils locked down the PK during the season, but have fallen apart in the playoffs on the PK. The Flyers will need to take advantage of their opportunities.

The Flyers offense has been amazing so far in the playoffs, averaging 5 goals per game. Those are some insane numbers. They may not get 5 a game in this series, but they will again, have to make the most of the limited opportunities they get in this series. They’ve gotta make them count.

As long as Ilya Bryzgalov plays half-decent, I think the Flyers will handle this team.

My prediction: Flyers in 6.
