From Jesse Spector at the Daily News:
The competition to play left wing for the Rangers already figured to be fierce, and last night, it got even tougher, with Ruslan Fedotenko agreeing to come to camp for a tryout. But he wasn’t the new guy on the ice today - it was Garnet Exelby, the big defenseman who spent six years with the Atlanta Thrashers before struggling with the Toronto Maple Leafs last season.
Exelby is also in for a tryout, and in a tough market for unrestricted free agents, he’s glad to be here - even if he doesn’t wind up making the team.
“I think you’ve got to go to training camp somewhere, because whether it goes well or not for me here, it’s a good chance to get picked up somewhere,” Exelby said. “If somebody goes down on another team - you never really know, but the point being you’ve got to go through training camp somewhere because otherwise you’re going to be another two or three weeks behind when you do figure out where you are playing.”
Not sure exactly what the Rangers are thinking here because as I said earlier, the team does not lack left wingers.
