The fourth-ranked Minnesota hockey squad held off Vermont, 3-1, Saturday to finish off a weekend sweep of the host Catamounts.
Minnesota fired 33 total shots on goal Saturday night, and jumped to a 2-0 advantage after an A.J. Michaelson score at the 3:59 mark of the second period. Vermont drew to within one early in the third period, off a goal from Jacob Fallon, before Minnesota's defense put the clamps down.
Finally, inside the game's final minute, Minnesota's Nate Condon tallied an empty-net goal to seal the hosts' fate.
The Gophers also got 26 total saves from netminder Adam Wilcox. Vermont was paced by Brody Hoffman, who registered 30 saves between the pipes.
"It was not an easy game for us," noted Minnesota coach Don Lucia. "(The Catamounts) played hard. But we found a way to get a win.
"I thought we had a good mindset," Lucia added, "and ground it out."

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) — Andre Hollins had a lot to deal with as he and his Minnesota teammate prepared to face Memphis in the Battle 4 Atlantis. His grandmother died last weekend. And across the court from him Friday were a lot people he knows well — he was one of the Memphis high school players who got away.
PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) — Andre Hollins stood outside the Minnesota locker room, playing with the strings on his backpack and smiling one of those once-in-a-lifetime smiles. A day after he scored 41 points, Hollins made three free throws with 0.4 seconds to play to give the Golden Gophers a 66-63 victory against Stanford on Saturday in the fifth-place game of the Battle 4 Atlantis.
