I had a bad feeling about tonight's Grand Rapids Griffins-Syracuse Crunch game as all the veteran leadership in the world can't prevent a very young team from getting a little over-eager when up 3-0 in a championship series... And I was right. The Grand Rapids Griffins' power play and a six-minute stretch in which the Griffins dropped a 2-1 lead and ended up losing 3-2 to the Syracuse Crunch, including a spear-that-was-a-not-a-spear yielding Gustav Nyquist tossed (5-minute major and a game) because Richard Panik got a stick on a hand and dove... Well, to put it politely, the Griffins got ahead of themselves, and they forgot that the fourth win is the hardest against a team that had lost one playoff game prior to its series against Grand Rapids in the hard-charging, big, physical and downright mean Crunch. But when mean is effective--Panik had a goal and an assist--the game-tying goal was a softy from an otherwise superhuman Mrazek (who channeled his innner Hasek at...

What did you think about the Panik-Almquist hit?

The gents in the comments section pointed out that what I saw in limited replays as a hit from behind from one Richard Panik to Grand Rapids Griffins defenseman Adam Almquist, during Game 3 of the Griffins-Crunch Calder Cup Final, was in fact nearly head-on as Almquist was turning toward play (I thought it was a check from behind, and got it wrong)...But Almquist is likely out for...

Fox 17’s Amorose: Griffins defenseman Adam Almquist has a concussion thanks to Panik hit

Regardless of what you may think about Richard Panik's hit on Adam Almquist, its result was perhaps predictable given that Almquist neither returned to the game between Panik's Syracuse Crunch and Almquist's Grand Rapids Griffins nor practiced today, and Fox 17's Steve Amorose reports: Grand Rapids Griffins Defenseman Adam Almquist may sit out the potential Calder...

Griffins-Crunch Game 5 game-day updates: Nyquist will play, Almquist won’t; Gudas to aid Syracuse

The Grand Rapids Griffins will attempt to rebound from a difficult 3-2 loss to the Syracuse Crunch on Friday night when they battle Syracuse in Game 5 of the Calder Cup Final this evening (7 PM EDT, AHLLive.com/WOOD TV8 in Grand Rapids/WOOD Radio), and at the present moment, it appears that the New Holland Sentinel's Alan Babbitt's "insider" report that Gustav Nyquist...

Red Wings overnight report: Griffins take Game 3, Babcock praises Glendening; are Wings ‘done on d?’

The Grand Rapids Griffins' 4-2 victory over the Syracuse Crunch in Game 3 of the Calder Cup Final had some Red Wings-tinged moments, and some of them didn't recall pleasant memories: on the game's first goal, Richard Panik boarded Adam Almquist, who crumpled to the ice in the Griffins' left corner, and play was allowed to continue until Panik scored. The same Panik...

Griffins/Red Wings mid-day news: Almquist likely out for GR; praise for Glendening and UFA talk

The Grand Rapids Griffins lost Adam Almquist's services thanks to a hard (and unnecessary) check from behind by Syracuse Crunch forward Richard Panik during Grand Rapids' 4-2 victory over the Crunch on Wednesday, and the Griffins practiced at Van Andel Arena this morning... Morning skate starts soon as we prepare for tomorrow's SOLD OUT Calder Cup Finals Game...

Nyquist and Andersson seek Calder Cup win with Griffins

Grand Rapids -- The Red Wings' loss was truly the Grand Rapids Griffins' gain. After the Wings lost in overtime of Game 7 in the second round to the Chicago Blackhawks, they immediately sent Gustav Nyquist and Joakim Andersson to the Griffins, who were locked in a battle with the Oklahoma City Barons in the American Hockey League's Western Conference Finals. "They...

Grand Rapids Griffins-Syracuse Crunch Game 5 open post: Blashill offers takes on 12 prospects

The Grand Rapids Griffins get a second chance to close out the Syracuse Crunch tonight (7 PM EDT, AHLLive.com/WOOD TV8 in Grand Rapids/WOOD Radio), and they'll do so minus Adam Almquist but including Gustav Nyquist, who the Grand Rapids Press's Peter J. Wallner reports was not suspended for whatever happened between Nyquist and Richard Panik last night. The Crunch expect...
