When Brendan Shanahan took over as NHL Senior VP of Player Safety and Hockey Operations, many saw him as a white knight. He was the Harvey Dent of the NHL, the man in charge of changing everything that is wrong on the ice. Almost immediately I had an issue with naming a guy like Shanahan to such a position. Many applauded his career, his highlights and the awards in his trophy case but he wasn't the cleanest player in the NHL. I remember the days where Detroit would play Colorado and Shanahan was clotheslining people. He would routinely fight. ****, he even mocked fans while in the penalty box. Did that ***** deserve it? Probably. That's not to say it's right. If that happened in the NHL these days, the player would probably get fined a certain amount of money and/or based on reputation (or if he played on Boston) suspended a game. When Shanahan took over, he immediately set the record straight and suspended anything in the pre-season that could have been co...

Devils Answer First Half Questions. By Steve Palumbo

Hockey This Week The NHL All-Star break is essentially the line of demarcation between the first and second half of the season. It provides an opportune time to sit back and reflect on a fast paced and eventful first half of hockey. It also gives us a chance to evaluate a team and their progression from training camp until now.  For the New Jersey Devils there were...

“Shanahan Drops the Ball”

Yesterday, Brendan Shanahan certainly had an interesting day. He had 2 disciplinary hearings scheduled regarding 2 incidents in the same game. To make matters more interesting, the victim of one of the incidents was the transgressor in the other. The result of these hearings? Alexander Ovechkin suspended 3 games for charging Zbynek Michalek, while Michalek received no further...

Ian Esplen: Top 10 Players I Target for the Canucks

Follow me on Twitter for random hockey talk, question and answer sessions, and the odd witty tweet Twitter Buttons A week ago I blogged about who was available for trade, today, I'd like to talk about the top 10 guys the Canucks should target. 1-Zach Parise- I'm not 100% Parise will be dealt. The Devils are in the playoffs right now and I can see them wanting...

Your Devils comments: What to do with Zach Parise?

Highlighting the best Devils comments on NJ.com

Where Will He Play?

Pretty self explanitory... huh? Where will Zach end up if he is dealt before or on the February 27th trade deadline? Will he stay, or will he go? Can Lou manage to sign the captain long-term, or will he be just a meer memory? Hopefully, Parise will stay put... but until a decision is made, we can only speculate. Below are 10 teams that Parise could end up with along with a brief...

The NHL violated the CBA with the Ovechkin suspension

Now, I don't know how the legality of this works, if it's the players union who should pursue action, Alexander Ovechkin or the Washington Capitals, but looking at the CBA Brendan Shanahan's ruling definitely violated the CBA. Ironically, it's the video he released that's the evidence of this violation. Of course, I'm not a lawyer, and I'm not talking...

What can NHL do about concussion problem?

When New York Rangers forward Wojtek Wolski elbowed Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson in the head earlier this season, causing a concussion, NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan declined to suspend Wolski. Shanahan cited Wolskis clean track record and the specifics of the play, arguing that Wolski didnt see Alfredsson until the last minute, then tensed up to protect himself. When...

Replacement goalie shines as Monsters top Hamilton, 4-1

Gerald Coleman made 37 saves in his first start in Cleveland as a Monster. He had been 1-1 in two road starts since signing a player-tryout contract Jan. 11.

Dropped Again

Well well well, another one goal effort by New Jersey results in a third straight loss. New Jersey fell to a slumping Buffalo squad that had lost their last 5 games before walking into Newark, along with a miserable 10 game record of 2-7-1. Through three periods it seemed like New Jersey was eventually, and, i'd like to STRESS the word EVENTUALLY, (becuase thats how the last...

Scott Hartnell was going through a list in his head of all the hits, scrums and penalties he accumulated in the last few games when he heard his phone ring and saw caller ID - Brendan Shanahan. .roundedcornr_box { background: none repeat scroll 0...
