John Tavares (and Team Canada) may be eliminated from the IIHF World Championships; he is still very much alive in the EA Sports NHL 13 Cover Vote.
Voting begins today, as the Islander all-star goes head to head with Detroit Red wings forward Pavel Datsyuk. Tavares knocked out Jordan Eberle in the first round of the cover vote.
"I'm flattered that I am moving onto the next round of the EA Sports NHL13 Cover Vote,” Tavares told the Islanders’ team website. “I've always said that we have amazing fans on Long Island that support this team. I appreciate the hours of voting they've put in for me and look forward to seeing what they can do as I'm up next against one of the NHL's great players, Pavel Datsyuk. Don't count Islander fans out, they'll always end up surprising you.”
Tavares has received endorsements from several other NHL players like P.K. Subban, Patrick Sharp, Steven Stamkos, and his fellow Islander teammates.

On Tuesday the Islanders announced the details for their annual draft party at the Nassau Coliseum, but with the Rangers and Devils in the midst of an Eastern Conference Finals series some Islander fans weren’t too happy to be thinking about the draft as their division rivals battled for a chance to compete for the cup.
The Team did respond and I thought it was worth posting:...
Finnish forward Jesse Joensuu's winning goal with nine seconds left lifted Finland past the United States 3-2 Thursday for a place in the semifinals of the hockey world championships in Helsinki.
Joensuu opened the scoring at 13:27 in the second period, before Anaheim Ducks' Kyle Palmieri scored 20 seconds later. Bobby Ryan added a goal for the USA early in the third period...
Finland's Jesse Joensuu scored his second of the game with 8.8 seconds left in regulation to give them the 3-2 lead and send Team USA home empty handed. In a very close game with many chances for both teams, there were only two penalties called, both against the United States. Neither resulted in a goal, but momentum was certainly a factor throughout the game.
As Islander fans we are used to being disappointed, as Americans, we are not. So when I first heard yesterday that Team Canada and our own John Tavares were knocked out of the IIHF WC quarterfinals I was shocked.
Team Slovkia scored with less than 3 minutes left while Getzlaf was in the box to break a 3-3 tie. To read Getzlaf's comments, it may seem the call was questionable...
Here’s a round-up of the English-language news I missed due to my post-concussive equivalent of migraines, and just as the first catch-up post talked about future events before getting down to brass tacks, this post will follow the same format:
• First and foremost, Pavel Datsyuk and John Tavares will face off in the semifinals of EA Sports’ NHL 13 Cover Vote from Friday...
