Veteran Detroit forward Tomas Holmstrom will announce his retirement on Tuesday before the Red Wings' home opener against Dallas, according to reports. The team has scheduled a 4:30 p.m. ET news conference in Joe Louis Arena. Holmstrom, who turns 40 on Wednesday, will hang up his skates after 15 seasons, four Stanley Cups championships and 1,026 games with the Red Wings. He had 243 goals and 530 points, and his 122 power-play goals are third in team history behind Nicklas Lidstrom and Gordie Howe. "Very, very ultra-competitive," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock told the Detroit Free Press. "All the best players are ultra-competitive. And found a way to win four Stanley Cup championships and represent his country, play I don’t know how many games. Pretty impressive.” Lidstrom, a longtime teammate of Holmstrom in Detroit, retired after last season.
