Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford admitted the obvious after the team fell for the sixth time in seven games - but he stopped short of making any public decisions.

"That was a very bad game," Rutherford said after the Hurricanes dropped a 4-0 decision to the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday.

“I am looking at everything (but) no decisions have been made. I have a lot of ideas in my head but I have not come to any conclusions yet.”

Perhaps those decisions will be made after Friday's game against the Buffalo Sabres (11-7-0).

Carolina (6-10-3) has been getting torched by opponents after yielding 3.47 goals and 33.1 shots per contest this season.

Maurice has been fired before by the Hurricanes - in 2003 - and knows he's under the microscope.

"This is the grind that you learn to survive and deal with it as a man, deal with your players, rally your troops, have direct and honest conversations with players that need to have those," Maurice said.

"And make sure that when you're standing behind the bench, you show that confidence in your team."

Maurice has guided the Hurricanes to four playoff appearances, although the team has missed the postseason in each of the last two seasons.
