Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that Islanders' general manager Garth Snow has been coy concerning the possibility of claiming Sean Avery on waivers.

Brooks adds that it's a long shot because he has plenty of enemies on Long Island, but Snow may jump at the chance to hurt the Rangers.

...we all saw last year the Islanders have no problem blocking teams from acquiring free agents on waivers with their signing of Nabokov, so this may not be out of the realm of possibility.

...and just to give you some more heartburn the Islanders waived their pest Trevor Gillies on Monday so there is an opening for Avery.

Before last night's game, John Tortorella talked about why the Rangers decided to recall Sean Avery...

"(Mike Rupp's knee injury) has a lot to do with this. We are concerned about that. We have to be careful with that, and I'm not sure what's going to happen. This is the right hockey decision now, and it was the right hockey decision when we sent Sean down."

...sorry Torts, obviously not the right decision to send him down if you're bringing him back just 9 games later. Rupp is just an excuse. Look how well the Rangers played without the big man last night. Avery was brought back because the Rangers needed a spark. Period.

Torts added this on Avery...

"Sean's biggest strength is his legs. He is a terrific skater, and, obviously, a big part of his game is his forecheck and his play underneath the hashmarks. We want him to play to his strengths and also work on the other parts of the game away from the puck. We want him to help us win a hockey game."

...i really do feel that Avery makes the Rangers a better team. I was kidding in my post game thoughts that the Avery recall sparked last night's win, but there's an argument to be made that EC and Wolski stepped up their games knowing a player of Avery's caliber was coming up and could easily replace them in the line-up. Competition has a funny way of motivating people.

Teams have until noon today to claim Avery or he'll be a Ranger again.
