The Bruins have attracted an endless amount of media in the offseason regarding the relentless information and news surfacing from and circulating within the organization.
The beginning of the month of July brought a megadeal with Dallas resulting in Tyler Seguin leaving Boston, Bruin-favorites adding multiple years to their Boston careers, hometown draftees, possible hockey hall-of-famers, and everything in between.
Simply put, the Bruins have not stopped since the loss to Chicago in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals on June 24.
Who have we actually gained?
It only took two consecutive tries to capture Jarome Iginla, former Pittsburgh Penguin. Iginla played on the Penguins last season when they were embarrassed, upset and swept against the Bruins in four games of the 2013 NHL Eastern Conference Finals.
Although Iginla has not put up the surfeit of points he is known for, Bruins fans better believe he will be a major asset for the 2013-2014 season.
Before Iginla made his NHL debut, he skated for a Western Hockey League team, Kamloops Blazers. He tallied up 136 points for the Blazers in the 1995-96 season as a 19-year-old. He played only two playoff games for the Calgary Flames during that season, where he posted a goal and an assist.
That was only the beginning.
In his 16-year career with the Flames, he tallied 525 goals and became the tenth NHL player to score 30 goals in 10 consecutive seasons. Iginla assisted for 570 goals, edging him into an elite group of hockey players who have collected 1,000 points.
Jarome Iginla as a Calgary Flame
I could go on-and-on about Iginla’s multiple awards, trophies, milestones and accomplishments or I could simply show you why he is a valuable player. The Sports Network (TSN) compiled his top ten moments as a Calgary Flame.
Without further adieu, here is Jarome Iginla’s top ten moments as a Flame:
What will Iginla do for the Bruins?
Well, to start off, he has a similar playing-style to that of Brendan Shanahan and Keith Tkachuk – in which he uses his speed to penetrate through the defense and uses his physicality to cough off pucks in the offensive zone. Nothing is worse for a defenseman chasing down a puck, to know that a strong and fast forward is bombarding in their direction, looking to ferociously clout him into the boards.
If I could live vicariously through Bruins Coach Claude Julien, I would muster up a dark-horse-like offensive line consisting of Chris Kelly centering Jarome Iginla and Daniel Paille on their respective wings. With the speed, tenacity and will-not-give-up mentality of Paille and Kelly, Iginla will fit in perfectly. Kelly and Paille are known for relentlessly pressuring the defense with their speed. Iginla, also extremely speedy, can work and use his physicality and great finesse to knock pucks past opponents’ netminders. No doubt, Iginla will make his presence known. In doing this, he would provide the defense an ultimate, if you will. The ultimatum would either be allowing Iginla to control the puck and limit Paille and Kelly, or cover Iginla and allow Paille and Kelly to dance swiftly in the offensive zone, creating numerous scoring opportunities.
Iginla may be well past his prime, but nonetheless his natural ability, knowledge, love and dedication for the game will propel him to have a successful 2013-2014 season with the Bruins. And hey, look at Jaromir Jagr. He was playing as a 41-year-old, yet he was capable of helping inch the Bruins into the finals. Regardless, Iginla will do great things for Boston.
