Last spring, Jeff Halpern was battling through an intense, hard-fought playoff series as a member of the Washington Capitals against the Rangers that ended in seven games and bitter defeat.

Fast forward to September and Halpern has jumped ship, signed to a one-year deal with New York in the hopes of helping the Rangers be a better team any way he can help. As a veteran of 12 NHL seasons and five other teams, Halpern knows what it's like to be the newcomer as he recently spoke with Rangers beat writer Jim Cerny.

..."Whenever you go to a new city and a new team you want to leave your mark on the team and make a good impression." Usually people are pretty protective of their locker rooms, and this group has been together a long time so you don't want to come in here and upset anything." But pretty quickly you become family, and you will lean on one another for support throughout a year of ups and downs. So the quicker you feel comfortable the better."...

Halpern also told Cerny his thoughts on his new team both pre-Rick Nash and now with the former Blue Jackets sniper.

..."I thought New York had a great team last year and was a legit Stanley Cup-contending team. But I think Rick just gives you that extra element or X Factor that a lot of teams need to get to that next level. Just to put an impact player like Rick into this lineup, which was a great team to begin with, it changes a lot of things for the better."...
  • From everything you've read so far, Halpern sounds like a stand-up teammate and overall good guy. I think he'll really help in the locker room and with faceoffs in key spots for the team: something the Rangers have struggled with in recent seasons.
  • Halpern, Pyatt and Nash all sound like genuinely good people. I guess Arron Asham has to convince me more to not dislike him as much as I already do..
