Jets get past struggling Lightning

Associated Press  |  Last updated November 15, 2011
Evander Kane, Tim Stapleton and Dustin Byfuglien each had a goal and an assist as the Winnipeg Jets ended a five-game losing skid with a 5-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday night. Ondrej Pavelec made 30 saves as Winnipeg earned its third home win of the season. Mark Flood and Andrew Ladd also scored for the Jets. Martin St. Louis and Steve Stamkos had goals for Tampa Bay, which was 0 for 6 on the power play. In the second of six games between the clubs this season - Tampa Bay won the first - Winnipeg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Kane and Byfuglien. Kane scored his sixth of the season after firing a shot that went in off the post on goalie Dwayne Roloson's stick side at 4:51. Kane then set up Byfuglien's third goal of the season when he sent a pass across the ice to the big defenseman, who ripped a slap shot into the net at 13:02. Winnipeg outshot Tampa Bay 16-11 in the first, while the Lightning had the period's only two power plays and couldn't beat Pavelec. Winnipeg killed off a 4-minute Lightning power play early in the second while defenseman Zach Bogosian was in the box for holding and unsportsmanlike conduct. The Jets went into the game ranked 22nd in the NHL in penalty killing and 20th with the man advantage. Winnipeg used its first power play of the game to make it 3-0 as Flood's shot from the high slot went through Roloson's pads at 7:49 of the second. The Lightning got on the board 3 minutes later when St. Louis scored with a close shot that went through Pavelec's pads. Winnipeg made it 4-1 less than two minutes later when Ladd stood in front of Roloson and had teammate Johnny Oduya's shot bounce off him into the net. Ladd's fifth goal of the season at 12:14 brought Mathieu Garon in to replace Roloson, who allowed four goals on 22 shots. The Jets killed off a 53-second, two-man advantage late in the second to carry their 4-1 lead into the final period. The teams traded goals 22 seconds apart in the third, with Stapleton scoring his second of the season at 10:04 and Stamkos notching his 11th. Notes : The loss ended a streak of 12 straight wins by the Lightning over the Winnipeg/Atlanta franchise, which had been the NHL's longest active streak by one team against a single opponent. ... During the Jets' five-game skid, they were 2 for 20 on the power play.
