The Detroit Red Wings need to shed some salary and free some cap space before the regular season begins in October. They could find some help with both issues soon, by dealing Jordin Tootoo back to the Nashville Predators. That potential deal may be in the works, according to FoxSportsDetroit’s Art Regner. He reported Saturday that the Wings and Predators, formerly division rivals, have discussed a trade to return Tootoo to the team with which he spent his first eight NHL seasons. Tootoo played 42 regular-season games for the Wings last season, tallying eight points, but he averaged a mere nine minutes per contest and saw action in just one playoff game. The arrival of a gaggle of young Red Wings forwards seems to leave little room for Tootoo to break back into the rotation in 2013-14, either. Tootoo has two years left on the contract he signed with Detroit last offseason, at an average of $1.9 million per season. The Wings currently have a little more than $1 million available in cap room for next season, with restricted free agents Gustav Nyquist and Joakim Andersson left to sign. They may still need to move another forward, even if Tootoo heads out the door, to make room for all of their up-and-coming forwards.
