Nikolai Khabibulin outdueled Jonathan Quick in posting his second shutout of the season, and Lennart Petrell scored his first NHL goal as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Los Angeles Kings 3-0 on Thursday night for their sixth straight win. Ryan Smyth and Corey Potter also scored for the Oilers (8-2-2), who've won eight of their first 12 games for the first time since 1986. That season, Edmonton won the third of their five Stanley Cup titles in seven years. Last season, the Oilers didn't earn their eighth victory until their 24th game. After a 4-4-10 start, Edmonton went on to finish last in the NHL (25-45-12) for the second straight season.

October Rookie of the Month: Nugent-Hopkins

As surprising as the news that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins would play the 2011-12 season with the Oilers was, the news that The Nuge has earned the Rookie of the Month title for October must have been even less of a surprise. The only way that Nugent-Hopkins would have been sent back to junior this year would have been if he didn’t play a game with the Oilers to begin with. Continue reading...

Oilers stick with Nugent-Hopkins

The Edmonton Oilers have made a couple of no-brainer decisions this year in regard to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. First, they made the center the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 Draft. Then late last week, they announced Nugent-Hopkins would not be returning to his junior team. "It's pretty awesome," Nugent-Hopkins said. "I really didn't know what to expect coming...

Richard Cloutier: Bizzare Love Triangle

Some interesting stories regarding the Edmonton Oilers right now: I am hearing Ales Hemsky should be ready to return to action when the Oilers return from their six-game road trip (approximately two weeks from now). Once Hemsky is ready to go, he'll play on the Geezer line with Shawn Horcoff and Ryan Smyth. Provided Hemsky can stay healthy, the Oilers will have a quality 1...

Oilers-Kings Preview

After being traded from the Edmonton Oilers during the 2006-07 season and spending the last two years with the Los Angeles Kings, Ryan Smyth wanted to return to his native Alberta. The Oilers couldn't be happier with the leadership and scoring boost the veteran forward has provided their young lineup this season. The team he just left could use some of that production. Smyth...
