By Christian Arnold (@CA_NYhockey) AP photo UNIONDALE, N.Y – Two games, two comebacks, and one common denominator; the play of Kyle Okposo. The 25-year-old winger has made quite the mark over the last two games against the Pittsburgh Penguins. On Friday his fight helped sparked the Islanders and his goal in the third period won the game for them. And despite loss Sunday, Okposo again proved huge. His shorthanded breakaway goal 5:31 got the Isles back into the game and reenergized the sold out Nassau Coliseum. After seeing around fifteen minutes of playing time in games one and two, Okposo saw his ice time jump to 24:23. Islanders’ head coach Jack Capuano also featured him predominantly in the overtime period on Sunday. “He’s been, especially the last two and a half months of the year, he’s playing a lot more physical,” Capuano said of Okposo’s play. “He’s playing a lot more poised and confident with the puck. He’s playing the way he ended the year last year. He’s been a big reason f...

Video- Discussing The Islanders’ Penalty In OT

from Arthur Staple of Newsday, Brian Strait took two penalties against Sidney Crosby in Game 3. The first, a hooking call early in the third, was the sort of call a player of Crosby's stature will get -- it wasn't much of a hook, but all eyes are on No. 87. In overtime, though, Crosby earned the call, getting good position on Strait, driving to the net and forcing...

Young New York Islanders Enjoying First NHL Playoff Experience

Isles' optimistic outlook takes hit with OT loss

The New York Islanders' rallying cry in their return to the postseason for the first time in six years is ''Believe.'' Even the most ardent of supporters might find that optimism difficult following a deflating home loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Buoyed by a split of the first two games of the first-round series in Pittsburgh, the Islanders came home to Nassau...

Isles return home for long-awaited playoff game

The New York Islanders said all the right things in the days leading up to their first-round playoff matchup against the top-seeded Pittsburgh Penguins. Yes, they knew the odds of an upset in a No. 1 vs. No. 8 series were stacked heavily against them, and yes they were aware that the Penguins roster reads more like an All-Star game lineup than an everyday club. Still, the upstart...

Tracking the Playoffs: Islanders vs. Penguins Game 3

One of the great things about the playoffs is the sense that anything can happen. It's an overstated narrative, but it's somewhat true when you think about it. Crazy things happen in a seven-game sample size (goalies standing on their heads, certain players going through a hot streak, etc.) and the heavily favored team doesn't always win. In this Pens/Isles series, the...

Kyle Okposo scores game-winning goal off Marc-Andre Fleury’s back

The Pittsburgh Penguins saw their commanding game two lead dwindle down to a 3-3 tie with the New York Islanders in the third period.  With just under eight minutes to play, Islanders forward Kyle Okposo threw a shot at the net that went wide.  It hit off the back wall, bounced out front and hit Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury in the back and trickled into the net.  The Islanders...

John Toperzer: Game Day: Pens-Isles series tied at one

Game 3: Pens-Islanders, whose will wins out? These teams want to do a lot of the same things. Keep the puck in the offensive end, play with speed, forecheck. Which team will be able to impose its will on the other? The Penguins are the more talented of the two side, but who wants it more? So long as New York gets quality goaltending from Evgeni Nabokov, this series is...

Dee Karl: Game 4: Outside the (penalty) Box

The Isles may be ‘relentless’ but the Penguins have too much skill to let them gain the main advantage. Jack Capuano spent yesterday’s practice time working on better penalty kill situations. But he also worked on instilling the idea of NOT ending up in the situation in the first place. Travis Hamonic said that didn’t mean giving up on the physical play....
