The NHL has suspended Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul for two games without pay for an illegal check to the head of Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman.
The league's department of player safety issued the ruling Thursday, while Toronto prepares to play at Buffalo. The hit occurred a day earlier in the third period of Toronto's 4-2 win.
Shortly after Hedman passed the puck in the neutral zone, Lupul left his feet while lunging into Hedman from the side. Lupul's lower left shoulder struck Hedman in the side of the head.
Lupul was issued a minor penalty for the hit. Hedman returned after briefly leaving the game.
The NHL ruled further discipline was necessary because Lupul targeted Hedman's head.
The suspension will cost Lupul about $46,000 in salary.

Yes, Joffrey Lupul may have just returned from a lengthy injury, but the Leafs will be without him for another two games. Lupul will have to sit out the next two Toronto matches after an illegal hit to the head of Victor Hedman in Wednesday’s 4-2 win over Tampa Bay. The incident occurred during the third period of the game [...]
TORONTO (AP) -- Nazem Kadri had three assists and Joffrey Lupul added a goal and an assist as the Toronto Maple Leafs snapped a five-game winless skid with a 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday night.
Dion Phaneuf, Tyler Bozak and Nikolai Kulemin also scored for Toronto. Kadri's three points tied a career high, and he had a chance at a fourth point but was...

What’s wrong with the Toronto Maple Leafs?
Since jumping out to a hot start this season, the Leafs have fallen back to the pack and currently sit sixth in the Eastern Conference — just three points ahead of the ninth-place New York Rangers. But what’s to blame? The Instigators all seem to agree that the goaltending has been solid, but Dale Arnold thinks the team is missing...
The Toronto Maple Leafs have their budding star to thank for pulling them out of their season-worst slump. Now, they look for him to keep pushing the club toward its first playoff appearance in nearly a decade.
Toronto hopes Nazem Kadri can continue his stellar play on Thursday night as the Maple Leafs visit the Buffalo Sabres, a team who may be without its own top scorer as it...
I apologize for my absence recently, I was on vacation in Florida and was unable to watch the games. But let’s talk about this game instead. The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight by a score of 4-2 in Jake Gardiner’s first game since being recalled (finally) from the AHL yesterday. In the [...]
This is an illegal hit to the head and a violation of rule 48. Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffery Lupul is going to get a call from the Department of Player Safety and if he isn't suspended, I will be very surprised. Apparently, this isn't the first time that Victory Hedman has been hit with a questionable and dirty hit this week. Zac Rinaldo also caught Hedman with a very...

The 2012-2013 shortened NHL campaign has been one of the most competitive seasons the Northeast division has experienced in the past decade. As of Friday, four teams (the Canadiens, Bruins, Senators and Maple Leafs, in that order) are separated by 10 points or less going into the dog days of the season.
The Leafs and Bruins will square off on the front...
Hockey fights are very common, but what is not are the significant events that took place in Buffalo on Thursday night.
Colton Orr, who has a total of 1,026 penalty minutes in his 11-year career, recorded 29 minutes in just two seconds of playing time on Thursday. The Maple Leafs’ right winger not only served two minutes for cross-checking Buffalo’s Patrick Kaleta, but he also...
Nothing like a good hockey game in between a fight.
That's basically what happened Thursday night when the Buffalo Sabres got a hard-fought 5-4 Shootout win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
And we say hard fought, we mean HARD fought.
The highlight of the evening to many: A Fight/Dance featuring a fight between Buffalo's John Scott and Toronto's Frazer McLaren...
The Tampa Bay Lightning announced today that Ryan Malone is out indefinitely and listed defensemen Victor Hedman as day-to-day. Both were hurt in Monday night’s win against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Malone missed 13 games this season and just came off of injured reserve under two weeks ago. He suffered a shoulder injury after the Flyers’ Zac Rinaldo drove into his left shoulder...
