The net belongs to Robin Lehner. But for how long? Senators starting goaltender Craig Anderson, who suffered a stiff neck in a collision with Dallas Stars forward Valeri Nichushkin last Sunday, is back practicing with the team and says he’s ready to start as early as Saturday against the beleaguered Florida Panthers. Anderson won’t be starting, however. Understandably, Senators head coach Paul MacLean is reluctant to remove Robin Lehner from the net on his current two-game winning streak, including a 4-1 Swedish eclipse of the Montreal Canadiens Thursday. Lehner was merely brilliant, earning first star honours by stopping 33 of 34 shots, many of them glorious scoring chances. For fans who hadn’t seen much of Lehner, the 22-year-old’s performance at the Canadian Tire Centre was a revelation. Lehner had a huge bearing on the game, not just because he stands 6-5 and cast a big shadow on many of the small Canadiens forwards. He stopped chances cold, and when Rene Bourque was in his crease during a melee, a mask-less Lehner gave him a burning death stare that could melt ice. Post-game, images of the stare made the rounds on social media. After Friday’s practice, team enforcer Matt Kassian made a few stops at stalls in the dressing room taking cellphone photos of teammates he asked to imitate the “Lehner Stare.” Mark Borowiecki and Cory Conacher did their best to look menacing, but weren’t in the same league. Only winger Chris Neil, with his stitched and swollen face, could have given Lehner a run for his money in the glare department.
