The Bolts faced a divisional foe in Carolina following a tough loss Monday afternoon. Fortunately for the Lightning they jumped out in front early on against the Hurricanes and didn’t look back, winning 4-1. First period goals by Tom Pyatt and rookie Cory Conacher gave the Lightning a 2-0 going at intermission. The Hurricanes would cut the lead in half in the second period. Ryan Malone’s boarding penalty created a 5-on-3 advantage for Carolina as Conacher was already in the penalty box. As time expired on the 2-man advantage, Hurricanes’ Jeff Skinner put in the backhand making it 2-1. But that is all that Carolina would get as the Bolts would ad two more goals in the third period from Keith Aulie and a power play goal from Ryan Malone. Lightning goalie Mathieu Garon got his first start in net and saved 35 of 36 shots faced. Tampa Bay was 1/6 on the power play. Hurricanes CHL Prospect Update 1/14 - 1/20

It was a bad opening weekend for the Hurricanes, but one thing that fans can perhaps take solace in is that their CHL prospects all had terrific weeks for the most part. What does this mean? Well, not a whole lot in the grand scheme of things but it's hard not to get excited when you hear that one of your team's prospects had four goals in three games like Brock McGinn did...

Lightning at Hurricanes game preview

Game time:7 p.m. ETTV: Sun Sports The Carolina Hurricanes couldn't get much going in their first game in more than nine months. Maybe they'll get energized by beginning their home schedule against a Southeast Division rival. Carolina opens a stretch of four of five on its own ice Tuesday night against a Tampa Bay Lightning club trying to avoid back-to-back road losses. Back...

Matt Karash: If at first you don't succeed...try...try again

Tonight the Carolina Hurricanes will take a third try at putting together a hockey game that does not look like a preseason game filled with mistakes that either get worked out or sent to the AHL before real games start. The Canes face a Buffalo team that is on the other side of the "who knows what we will get out of the gate" ledger with a 2-0 record. Right now there...

Late rally comes up short as Lightning lose to the Islanders

Lightning captain Vinny Lecavalier played his 1,000th game today against the New York Islanders. Unfortunately, Tampa Bay could not find a defensive answer and a late offensive surge was not enough as they fall to the Isles 4-3. The Islanders were out in front 4-0 in the third period before the Lightning can even put a legitimate offensive threat together. Martin St. Louis got the...

Matt Karash: What to change after game 1? / Preview for home opener

Game 1 of the 2013 season for the Carolina Hurricanes made for a mess trying to sort out how to go forward. The game was mostly a train wreck of mistakes with a decent amount of sustained pressure that was thwarted by good goaltending. It is not as if you would so much blame the results on line combinations not working or chemistry not being there even if there was some of that...

Aulie, Lightning top Hurricanes

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Keith Aulie scored the momentum-shifting goal that propelled the Tampa Bay Lightning past the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 on Tuesday night. Tom Pyatt and Cory Conacher scored early goals, Ryan Malone added a power-play tally, and Vincent Lecavalier had two assists. The Lightning pulled away with two goals in the third period. Jeff Skinner scored a power play goal...

Tampa Bay strikes down Carolina 4-1

There are a lot of things I could say about the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. I could talk about how the Hurricanes, once again, got off to a slow start and allowed a goal on the first scoring chance of the game. Then, I could explain how they outshot Tampa Bay 36-26 but ended up losing because of being outplayed in the special teams department and getting...

Game 2 Scoring Chances: Lightning at Hurricanes

For the second game in a row, the Hurricanes outchanced their opponents only to come out on the losing end of a blowout. Despite outchancing both Florida and Tampa Bay by a combined 40-34 and 32-23 at even strength, the Canes have been outscored 2-9 and now find themselves starting the year with an 0-2-0 record. This is frustrating to watch, but the fact that Carolina has been winning...

Pregame Report: Sabres vs Hurricanes

(Courtesy: Dave Sandford/Getty Images North America) After two days, the Sabres return to action tonight with the first half of a home-and-home series against the Carolina Hurricanes.  Hopefully the team made good use of their two day break between games because it’s their last such break for the next three weeks. Buffalo enters tonight with a 2-0 record on the young season, —...

Canes look to take home opener against the Bolts

Ward defending against FLA's Jonathan Huberdeau (AP) RALEIGH – The Carolina Hurricanes are looking to erase an “Opening Day” loss to Florida in their home opener. The Canes take on the Tampa Bay Lightning at PNC Arena Tuesday night. Puck drops at 7:00pm. This will be the first of five meetings between the Southeast Division rivals in the 48-game, 2012...

Charlotte Checkers Weekly Update

Despite having a roster that lost most of their top players to injury and NHL graduation, the Charlotte Checkers managed to win two out of their three games this week and maintain a record that puts them tied for first in the AHL's Western Conference. None of these wins came easy, though as the Checkers had to make do with few players who were only recently called up from the...

Lightning 4, Hurricanes 1

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Tampa Bay goalie Mathieu Garon made 35 saves in his season debut as the Lightning picked up goals from four players in a 4-1 victory against the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night at PNC Arena. The Hurricanes (0-2) have won only their fourth home opener in 15 years since the franchise relocated to North Carolina. Carolina lost its season opener 5-1 Saturday at...
