It was a night for David Clarkson and Jonathan Bernier to make first impressions with Maple Leafs fans. By the end though it was Drew MacIntyre who had electified the crowd in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers at the Air Canada Centre. Clarkson and Bernier — acquired with much fanfare over the summer — did what they were supposed to do. Clarkson was great at forechecking and getting under the skin of the Flyers. He even got into a skirmish after taking a big hit from Nicklas Grossmann. “I don’t really care if it’s exhibition or playing mini-sticks with a buddy. When you hit hard like that I’m somebody who’ll always address it” Clarkson said afterwards. “That was just me getting a little frustration out from everything. I don’t care if it’s exhibition or finals. “It wasn’t much of a fight. He pulled me down. He’s kind of like moving a fridge . . . I didn’t like getting hit like that.” Leafs coach Randy Carlyle didn’t mind one bit that his prized free-agent signing dropped the gloves in a meaningless exhibition game against a player about 30 pounds heavier. “That’s a little sample of what he’s about” said Carlyle. “He plays a scrappy-type game. He’s done it all his career. That’s why he is what he is.” Bernier allowed just one goal by Luke Schenn in the first 30 minutes facing 22 shots as he adjusts to Leafs-style play after beginning his career with the Los Angeles Kings. “Everything changed obviously: the system the way you play the penalty kill the way they’re going to handle the forecheck and stuff like that” said Bernier. “So you’ve got to make sure that you know where your (teammates) are going to be. For me especially handling the puck that’s a big adjustment.” When MacIntyre took over for Bernier something strange happened. First he made a big save then an acrobatic one. Then the big screen showed that behind-the-back glove stop he made with the Marlies last year and everyone seemed to say to the person beside them: “Oh yes I remember now.”
