The Toronto Maple Leafs sent defenceman Keith Aulie to the Toronto Marlies of the AHL Monday morning. It is believed that the move was made in order to make room for Carl Gunnarsson, who is set to return from injury.
Aulie, 22, has been up and down from the minors ever since he joined the Maple Leafs in January 0f 2010. In 17 games with the Leafs this season, Aulie has two points, both of which are assists, and a minus-two rating. Perhaps his best game came this past Wednesday when he picked up an assist and went plus-two against the Edmonton Oilers.
Gunnarsson, meanwhile, has not played since February 12 after he crashed into the boards during practice last week. He has arguably been the Leafs’ most consistent defencemen this season, which is something the team doesn’t have many of. In 55 games, the six-foot-two, 196-pound Swede has two goals, 14 assists and a plus-three rating.
