New York Rangers held a Dog Walk charity event at Riverside Park yesterday and head coach John Tortorella held a Q&A session with the fans on hand. One fan asked about Rangers defenseman Michael Sauer and his status.

The news was pretty grim (courtesy of Jim Cerny of Blueshirts United)

Question: After (Michael) Sauer's concussion, is he doing better and will we see him at the beginning of the season?

John Tortorella: I don't think you'll see Michael. Michael has not responded that well, I'll be quite honest, and I do not think you'll see him at the beginning of the season. That's a big hole for us. Michael played very well for us, and we certainly missed him during the playoff run. I think it's going to be a little bit of time before Michael resumes his career.

On Friday, it was reported by Bruce Berlet that Sauer's condition wasn't improving and the Rangers believed he wouldn't be ready for the season.

  • It continues to get worse and worse for Sauer. And it's a shame, because we heard in July he was making tremendous progress. If the Rangers add a healthy Sauer to their defense, you can make the case its the best in the NHL in front of Lundqvist. Sauer plays with that physical edge and throws the body around and it'll be sorely missed if he's not playing anytime soon.
