A penalty shot in hockey is one of the more exciting plays in sports. A penalty shot in overtime raises the bar a few notches. The Rangers received a penalty shot after Coyotes defenseman Adrian Aucoin picked up a slashing penalty against Rangers nastyman Marian Gaborik. Gaborik, who has the moves like Jagger (sorry), used them to fake Smith out of his socks. The result: Smith responded with the save of the year to date. Sure, it looks like a Gaborik fail and that all he had to do was put some air on the shot. But he actually did. Smith's tree trunk of a stick was up in the air to deflect the shot. Mike Smith’s save of year candidate on Marian Gaborik OT penalty shot (Video)

Marian Gaborik is, arguably, the New York Rangers' deadliest offensive player. Giving him a penalty shot in overtime — which Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Adrian Aucoin did, slashing him on a breakaway on Tuesday night — would appear to be a handy way to effectively end the game. Coyotes goalie Mike Smith, however, had other plans: Stopping Gaborik with his stick on a spectacular...

Rangers/Yotes Post-Game Analysis

The Rangers played a pretty strong game tonight, but they almost didn’t come away with a win thanks to solid goaltending by Mike Smith and some strong defensive plays by the Coyotes.  The Yotes played a 1-2-2 neutral zone trap and were able to force the Rangers wide for most of the game, but they also got beat by the Rangers relentless forecheck and seeded possession. Luckily...

Rangers Continue to Roll

No matter what the game is or who the team is playing, the New York Rangers always seem to find a way to win. The team did just that last night in a 2-1 shootout win over the Phoenix Coyotes at Madison Square Garden. The Blueshirts probably could have won the game in regulation time if not for the outstanding goaltending from Coyotes’ netminder Mike Smith (31 saves) but since...

Another Day, Another Way for Rangers to Win

Usually, you find that teams winning 10 of their last 11 games are operating at a very high level as they polish off opponent after opponent without breaking much sweat. That hasn't been the case for the Rangers. They've had a few nights where they have simply overwhelmed the opposition, but they've also had nights where they came back to find a way to victory and they...
