Pavel Datsyuk confronts Paul Gaustad and Ryan Suter on March 30, 2012 at Joe Louis Arena
By Rhys Richards (@RREsq)
Last Tuesday, the Detroit Red Wings and their fans celebrated the 15th anniversary of the team’s brawl with the Colorado Avalanche at Joe Louis Arena with a 7-2 drubbing of the Columbus Blue Jackets at home. That famous bloodbath pitted Igor Larionov against Peter Forsberg, Brendan Shanahan against Adam Foote, and Mike Vernon against Patrick Roy. With all of those well-known players in the mix, the brawl is still remembered most for Darren McCarty pummeling Claude Lemieux until Lemieux turtled.
As the fifteen years have passed, the vast majority of the players on both teams have retired from the game. As those players went, so did the Detroit-Colorado rivalry. Detroit’s success in the past two decades means that the Red Wings regularly see all other NHL teams at their best, but Detroit has been waiting for another team to take Colorado’s place as its fiercest rival.

According to MLive’s Ansar Khan, the Red Wings have officially signed Riley Sheahan to a 3-year, entry-level contract, and they summoned the power forward to Detroit for the move, but that doesn’t mean he’ll play against the New Jersey Devils tonight (7:30 PM EDT, FSD/MSG/97.1 FM)...

DET (48-27-5) are 4th in Conference again thanks to a miraculous come-from-behind road victory at STL last night. The Wings rallied from, what had to be total dejection going down 2 goals in the 3rd. The PP has become indescribably bad. At one time, in the not too distant past, you could reasonably expect it to score a goal per game, it was so good. Nowadays, you just hope...

Three games to go and with two of those last three coming against cenral division foes playoff hockey starts tonight. Detroit travels down to the land of stupid arches and stupid "fans" to face the upstart St. Louis Blues in their final meeting of the regular season. Wings come back from 2-0 down with six minutes left to win in a shootout. That's a huge two points for Detroit. And how did it all happen?Jump to find out:
The only team that can beat Detroit is Detroit. St. Louis scored twice because of turnovers and Detroit scored twice because of great plays. Not to say that St. Louis was handed a point tonight, because they played well...
The Nashville Predators and Dallas stars hooked up in a classic battle between two teams fighting in the trenches for playoff positions on Thursday night at the Bridgestone Arena. The game was a scoreless standoff until Frankie Bouillon broke through with a goal on a rebound with 15:32 remaining in the contest. The only other score in the game was on a goal from Patric Hornqvist with...
Got some good news, gang...The Namesake is back on the ice already.Helm is feeling so much better, that he took to the ice at this morning's skate."Before I came in today, I wasn't even sure when I could get back on the ice." --Darren HelmBut get back on the ice he did. That quote came to us via The Detroit News.More on Helm's somewhat imminent return.
Last night the New Jersey Devils did something they have not been able to do in a very, very long time: beat the Detroit Red Wings in Detroit. Here are some notes on last night's game.
- First off, congratulations to Pete DeBoer on coaching a team in New Jersey that not only reached the playoffs in his first year behind the bench, but hit the 100-point plateau. It's very...
Did I just write one of these? Whatever. Wings lost 2-1 to the Devils tonight. Seems to me they were just gassed after playing an OT game on the road against the Blues and just couldn't finish strong. A wasted opportunity, but if they had a day off, I think this game ends differently.Jump for the Recap:
Hudler had a strong game. Late in the second period he made a great...

Last season, the Detroit Red Wings nearly dashed the Chicago Blackhawks' playoff hopes in the final game of the regular season.
This time, the Blackhawks could play a spoiler of sorts in Saturday's finale at Joe Louis Arena with a chance to help deny the Red Wings home-ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs.
Chicago fell 4-3 to visiting Detroit on the last day...
