The New Jersey Devils started the year on a hot streak until Martin Brodeur was placed on IR.  Brodeur missed 13 games but made his return on Thursday night against the Carolina Hurricanes.  In the first period the Devils were on the powerplay when a bizarre play happened.

Carolina Hurricanes forward Patrick Dwyer was killing the penalty when he had an excellent shorthanded scoring chance.  He was hooked on the play and the Devils were going to have a player headed to the penalty box.  Brodeur had just made the save, making him the last Devils player to touch the puck, when Jordan Staal picked up the puck and sent a pass to the point.  The only problem was it was a bad pass and the puck went all the way down the ice and into the empty net because Hurricanes goalie Dan Ellis had left the ice to give the Hurricanes an extra attacker on the delayed penalty.  I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this is Brodeur’s first career power play goal.

Yikes, that stat has to hurt New York Rangers fans.

Martin Brodeur scores power play goal, with help from Hurricanes (Video)

As a result of some poor puck handling by the Carolina Hurricanes, the puck ended up in their own net during the first period of Thursday night's game, giving the New Jersey Devils a power play goal. To add insult to injury, however, the Devils goal was credited to goaltender Martin Brodeur, as he was the last Devils player to touch the puck on the play. Interestingly enough...

Martin Brodeur has scored three goals in his career, including the playoffs. Thursday night, Marty was credited with a goal in his first game back from injury against the Carolina Hurricanes. Martin Brodeur Nets Third Career Goal in Bizarre Play Against Carolina (Video)

After a delayed Devils penalty, Hurricanes forward Jordan Staal made an errant pass to the point which deflected...

Marty Brodeur Scores In Return To Ice

((HT: NHL/MSG)) Moose Hedberg got his time between the pipes while Martin Brodeur was out with a back injury that kept him out a month... So, what do you do to welcome yourself back...??? Score a goal... Technically, he was credited with a goal since he was the last Devil to touch the puck in an own goal situation. But, hey, a goal is a goal... and a power play goal...

New Jersey Devils: Missing Martin Brodeur

By Kristin Tullo (@K_Tullo) Getty Images It’s almost an ironic position for the Devils to be in. Projected to miss the playoffs because of their aging goaltender, the Devils went from two points out of first place with their Hall of Fame goaltender, Martin Brodeur, to being two points out of a playoff spot because of his absence. On the verge of making his debut back between the...

Martin Brodeur Scores Goal Against Hurricanes

New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur scored a surprising and odd goal tonight against the Carolina Hurricanes to put the Devils on top 1-0. Early in the first period, there was a delayed call on the Devils after a shot by Carolina that Brodeur stick saved, so, Hurricanes goaltender Dan Ellis left the net for an extra attacker. Jordan Staal received the puck and tried to pass...

The hot news out of Milwaukee isn’t the fact that the Phillies took three straight from the team that entered their series with the best record in the National League. Mark Cuban had Parsons sign offer sheet where???

I don’t think you could dream up a more appropriate way for Chandler Parsons to sign his $45 million offer sheet from the Dallas Mavericks, than to have Mark Cuban be with you while hanging out in a nightclub. Parsons, the third-year forward for the Houston Rockets, has suddenly been thrust into the spotlight of Houston’s off season, as general manager Daryl Morey attempts to...

Pitino on Chris Jones: As good a guard as I've coached

Rick Pitino has coached some pretty good guards during his nearly 40-year career in college basketball.  Recently at Louisville, there was Russ Smith, the two-time All-American, and Peyton Siva, the point guard who led the Cardinals to a national championship in 2013. He had a host of talented players at Kentucky, too, the school with which he won it all in 1998.  A player currently...

The Brooklyn Nets and owner Mikhail Prokhorov have never been shy about spending money, but this is a little crazy. On Wednesday the NBA released its audit of teams ahead of the start of the new fiscal year (which starts at midnight) and the Nets will pay a ridiculous, record luxury bill. According to Brian Windhorst, the Nets owe $90.57 million in luxury taxes for the 2013-14 season...
