PLAYERS: Gary Bettman
TEAMS: Arizona Coyotes
Of the slate of cringe-inducing comments issued by one NHL commissioner Gary Bettman during yesterday's introduction of the Phoenix Coyotes' new owners, this one made me cringe the most, as noted by the Arizona Republic's Sarah McLellan: Ownership of the Coyotes ceremoniously exchanged hands Tuesday at Jobing.com Arena when NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman ceded control to IceArizona, which completed the $170 million sale the day before to resolve the four-year odyssey. Some of the changes ushered in by the new set of owners will be flashier than others. Already there’s a contingent of billboards plastered across the Valley announcing the team is “Here to Stay.” And the All-Star Game, which was promised to Glendale in 2006 but then wiped out by a lockout, could return. “We’re going to do that at some point,” Bettman said. “I don’t know what the date is yet, but it’ll be our pleasure to honor a commitment to bring the All-Star Game here.” Continued

What’s in a name?

We are saying goodbye to the Phoenix Coyotes, just not in the way many predicted. Tuesday, as the sale of the Coyotes closed and ended a years-long ownership struggle, it was confirmed that the artists currently known as the Phoenix Coyotes will become the Arizona Coyotes a year from now. It’s seemingly opened up an old discussion about the location sports franchise identify themselves...

Coyotes to hold off on name change from Phoenix to Arizona

During the Glendale City Counsel meetings, the members often said "Arizona Coyotes." Some on Twitter pointed out, with snark, that name wasn't the name of the team; it's the Phoenix Coyotes. Duh.  As part of the agreement with the new ownership group, the Coyotes were planning on changing from Phoenix to Arizona this season to reflect the fact that a) the team...

NHL completes sale of Phoenix Coyotes

The National Hockey League completed the sale of the Phoenix Coyotes to investors led by Canadian businessmen George Gosbee and Anthony LeBlanc on Monday ending a four-year saga during which the league operated the team as an ever-changing cast of potential buyers came and went. “It was probably one of the most complicated transactions I’ve worked on in 21 years in the financial...

Coyotes set to move forward with new owners

(Eds: Updates throughout) By JOHN MARSHALL AP Sports Writer The Phoenix Coyotes' four-year ownership saga is over. The papers are signed. The NHL has approved the deal. The team's fans, players and front office can finally relax. ''Today is about turning our collective focus to the strong future of the Coyotes here in Arizona and clearly stop talking about ownership...

New Coyotes owners aim to bring All-Star Game to Glendale

The Phoenix Coyotes officially announced that they are here to stay in the Valley with a press conference on Tuesday afternoon from Jobing.com Arena. While there were some noteworthy points, the big news didn’t come from the presser itself.

Bettman On The Outdoor Games

from the CP at TSN, "If you're looking at it on a national basis, obviously we're doing more," commissioner Gary Bettman said Thursday at Yankee Stadium, which will host two games in January. "But for teams and markets that want to host this (event), for fans that want to attend, we can't do enough of them." In Canada and the United States...

Bettman's efforts earn him savior status in Arizona

You’ve probably heard Phoenix called a non-traditional hockey market. Why argue with the overwhelming body of evidence? After all Phoenix is the only place where they boo Wayne Gretzky and cheer Gary Bettman. If you know your history you understand the former. But given the generally low popularity of professional sports commissioners the latter may require deeper explanation...

NHL previews Stadium Series at Yankee Stadium

Like it or not, the NHL is going to be hosting six outdoor games in 2014. Two of these games will take place in Yankee Stadium and will feature the New York Rangers. The first will take place on January 26th between the Devils and Rangers and then three days later the Rangers will battle the Islanders.  Whether you're in favor of the NHL hosting so many outdoor games in a...

Clock Still Ticking In Phoenix

from Dan Bickley of the Arizona Republic, The entire community might even wear party hats if we could convince the new owners to make one final gesture: Ditch the out clause that could reignite relocation fears within the next five years, one that keeps a clock hanging over this hockey team. “I don’t understand all the attention it is getting,” NHL Commissioner...
