The New Jersey Devils are both two points away from joining 16 teams in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and two points away from falling into 11th and increasing their odds of joining the other 14 teams for the first-overall draft pick in June. So with the clock ticking on their fate, it may not be too early to call tonight’s game against the Boston Bruins a “must win” for New Jersey.
With just 15 regulation wins after 39 games, the Devils will need a victory tonight without going to a shootout in order to keep their playoff hopes alive. While it may be the extra point they earned by making it to nine shootouts that has kept them in the race, those points become less valuable in the event of a tie breaker where wins in the first 60 minutes weigh more than a point earned in the skills contest.
