After splitting the first two games of their quarterfinal series, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish upset top-seeded Boston College 4-2 on Sunday afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the Hockey East tournament in its first season in the league. Senior forward Bryan Rust potted two goals, including the game-winner with four seconds remaining in the second period, to propel the Irish to the decisive Game 3 win. ND also held Boston College standout Johnny Gaudreau, who leads Division I men’s hockey in scoring, scoreless on the day. Notre Dame will face UMass Lowell in the semifinals at TD Garden on Friday. The River Hawks earned a 2-1 victory on Sunday against Vermont to take the series in three games. Sophomore goaltender Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves as Christian Folin and A.J. White led the way with a goal each for UMass Lowell. In other Sunday action, New Hampshire moved past Northeastern with a 5-4 win and will face Providence, who swept the University of Maine, in the semifinals. Kevin Goumas netted a hat trick for the Wildcats, while Nick Sorkin and Brett Pesce each chipped in a tally as well. The Hockey East semifinals will be held at the TD Garden on Friday, March 21. Both semifinal games and the championship game on Saturday, March 22 will be broadcast by NESN. Photo via Twitter/@ev_sporer Filed under: Anna Fogel, Boston College, Hockey East, Top Stories
