Edmonton defenseman Andy Sutton got the Shanaban treatment today, getting a five-game suspension for his hit the other night on Avs rookie Gabriel Landeskog.
I said some harsh things about Sutton in a blog on the matter the other day, and while I’m not backing down on my belief that Sutton is not a very good player and that he deserved a suspension, throwing out 20-25 games as the length I’d give him might have been a little too casual by me.
Then again, while I like fighting in general and like rough, tough hockey, I have come around to believe that these blindside hits to the head have got to go, that there’s nothing particularly tough about delivering them and that maybe a suspension of that length would send the really strong message to the players and get those hits out of the game for good.
