BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Jason Pominville scored at 2:19 of overtime, and Ryan Miller finished with 22 saves to lift the Buffalo Sabres to a 2-1 win over the Florida Panthers on Friday night. Derek Roy also scored for the Sabres (15-11-2), who won for just the third time in their past nine games (3-4-2). Buffalo also won for only the second time in its past eight home games. Jason Garrison scored, and Scott Clemmensen finished with 18 saves for the Panthers (16-8-5), who failed to win their fourth straight for the first time since March 2008. Florida also missed an opportunity to climb over idle Philadelphia and into the top spot in the Eastern Conference. The Flyers and Panthers both have 37 points, but Philadelphia has played two fewer games. Pominville notched the winner with a wrist shot on a breakaway from the blue line. Down by a goal after 20 minutes, the Panthers tied it at 1 on Garrison's ninth of the season while Florida enjoyed a 5-on-3 power play. Garrison one-timed Tomas Fleischmann's pass from behind the goal line. Roy gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead with his seventh of the season with 2:10 remaining in the first period. After receiving a pass at the blue line from Drew Stafford, Roy went in alone and wristed a shot past Clemmensen, who got a piece of the puck before it trickled in. NOTES: Buffalo LW Ville Leino served his one-game suspension for elbowing Philadelphia's Matt Read in the head during Wednesday's game with the Flyers... Sabres LW Nathan Gerbe missed his first game after sustaining a concussion against the Flyers, but D Jordan Leopold and C Cody McCormick returned after both missed time with injuries... The Sabres recalled forward Paul Szczechura from Rochester of the AHL prior to the game to replace Gerbe... Buffalo RW Corey Tropp left in the first period and didn't return after absorbing an open-ice hit by Florida D Dmitry Kulikov. The Sabres said Tropp sustained an upper-body injury.

Sabres preaching patience after inconsistent start

A rash of injuries has made it difficult for Buffalo Sabres management to assess what to make out of a high-priced team off to an inconsistent start. Rather than overreact, Sabres president Ted Black is preaching patience. Buffalo's had eight players - including goalie Ryan Miller - miss at least six games. Though disappointed in the team's 3-5-2 skid, Black notes the Sabres...

This One’s On Enroth

Forgive me, Sabres fans and Ryan Miller antagonists, for giving Buffalo’s skaters a pass for last night’s ugly 4-1 home loss the the Rangers.  It’s simple to say you need to score more than one goal on backup goaltender Martin Biron, but there’s more to the story than that. The Sabres this weekend were involved in a pair of ugly, boring defensive hockey games at home....

Friday’s Three Stars: Wideman’s power trick*; Pominville OT hero

No. 1 Star: Dennis Wideman, Washington Capitals During a 5-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, Wideman became the first Capitals defenseman to record a hat trick* since Sergei Gonchar in 2000. Making Wideman's first ever trick even more special was the fact that all three goals came on the power play. He also added an assist for good measure as Washington has now won two in...
