Buffalo Sabres bully Patrick Kaleta on Tuesday received a strong message from the NHL by giving him a 10 game suspension for his ‘check to the head’ of Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson. As seen on video by Brendan Shanahan and the NHL, the claims that Kaleta took what is termed as “an improper angle” causing his shoulder to make direct contact to Jack Johnson’s chin were confirmed. With Kaleta’s lengthy history as a repeat offender (he’s been fined and/or suspended six times in the last four years), Shanahan said that a check like that would receive a supplemental discipline regardless who delivered the hit, but says the severity of the punishment is also based on past history of the offender. Luckily though, Johnson, who is 26 did not suffer any injury from the hit. The 27 year old Kaleta has already served two games of suspension and is eligible to return during the Nov. 2 home game against the Ducks of Anaheim.
