Pavel Datsyuk, the Russian star player for the Detroit Red Wings, was asked his opinion regarding the anti-gay stance of Russia’s current leader, Vladimir Putin, and the anti-gay laws that have taken center stage in the country, as we move closer to the Sochi Olympics next Winter. Datsyuk’s teammate, Henrik Zetterberg, was very critical of the narrow-minded, and extremly cruel laws. Here is Datsyuk’s reply via Deadspin: “That’s his opinion. My position—I am Orthodox. That says it all.” Basically, he tried his best to say “no comment” while still looking like he agrees with Putin. What did everyone expect? He didn’t necessarily endorse the laws, but certainly didn’t argue against them being in place. Let’s be real here. If he said anything else, he’d probably disappear tomorrow. In 9 months, we’d find his partially decomposed body sleeping with the fishes. Wait, wrong European mafia. How about sleeping with the, ummm, borsche? Sure, whatever.
