Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 23 shots to break a tie for Pittsburgh's career shutout record with 23, and the Penguins beat the New York Rangers 3-0 on Saturday for their eighth straight victory. Beau Bennett, Pascal Dupuis and Tyler Kennedy scored, and Dustin Jeffrey added two assists as the Penguins continued to dominate the reeling Rangers. Pittsburgh has won seven consecutive meetings with New York, which lost for the fourth time in its last five games. Fleury broke a tie with Tom Barrasso for the club shutout record. Henrik Lundqvist made 24 saves for the Rangers, but New York failed to score for the third time this season. The Rangers, the best team in the Eastern Conference last spring, trail Pittsburgh by 14 points with six weeks left in the regular season. Catching the high-flying Penguins might be tough for just about everybody else in the East if Pittsburgh continues to play solidly at both ends of the ice. Still, it was just 1-0 until early in the third period, when Kennedy drew a tripping penalty from New York's Anton Stralman then cashed in a minute later when he rocketed a one-timer from the left circle past Lundqvist. Less than 60 seconds later it was 3-0 as Dupuis scored his 14th of the season and left what little drama remained focused on Fleury's pursuit of the shutout record. The goalie had come close earlier this season only to see the shutout disappear in the final minute. Not this time. When Dupuis dumped the puck into the New York zone as the clock expired, the crowd rose to its feet in appreciation while Pittsburgh's bench raced onto the ice to pay respect to the team's career leader in goaltending victories. Bennett gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead barely 90 seconds in, taking a nifty tap pass off the boards from Dustin Jeffrey and blistering a slap shot from right circle over Lundqvist's shoulder. Only brilliant play from the New York goalie prevented things from getting any worse for the Rangers, who needed more than 10 minutes to get off a shot and spent most of the first 20 minutes in a general malaise. The only real spark came from defenseman Dan Girardi, who tangled with NHL leading scorer Sidney Crosby frequently. At one point both players lost their cool, drawing matching minors for roughing when Girardi knocked off Crosby's helmet and the Pittsburgh captain responded by sticking his glove into Girardi's face. New York recovered in the second, getting into Fleury's face and generating some momentum. Penguins coach Dan Bylsma called timeout to get his team settled, and the Penguins responded by playing the kind of responsible defensive hockey that's fueled the second half of their winning streak. Pittsburgh began its run by winning a series of one-goal shootouts, allowing at least three goals in each of the first four games. Things have changed quickly. The Penguins have surrendered just four goals in their last 16 periods thanks in part to shying away from the sometimes reckless play that can Fleury or backup Tomas Vokoun into tight spots. NOTES: Penguins C Evgeni Malkin did not skate on Saturday and he remains out with an undisclosed upper-body injury. Coach Dan Bylsma says there is no timetable on Malkin's return. Fleury leads Penguins in shutout

Marc-Andre Fleury couldn't help it. With the Pittsburgh Penguins' franchise record for career shutouts in sight late in the third period against the New York Rangers on Saturday, the talented if occasionally erratic goalie let his mind drift. ''I wanted it so bad,'' Fleury said. ''I tried to not jinx it. I was touching wood, but yeah I was looking...

‘Ugly’ Goal Propels Penguins Past Bruins in St. Patrick’s Day Matinee (Video)

The Pittsburgh Penguins are known for their explosive offense, but Sunday’s tilt with the Bruins was a defensive affair. The two teams combined for just three goals, and the game-winner came courtesy of an unlikely source. Northeastern alum Joe Vitale scored for just the sixth time in his NHL career — and the first time since last February — with 32 seconds remaining in the...

Penguins History: Bob Paradise

It might come as a surprise for Penguins fans to learn that a Hall-of-Fame defenseman skated for the team in the mid-to-late 1970s. No, it wasn’t shot-blocker extraordinaire Dave Burrows or even Norris Trophy winner Randy Carlyle. His name was Bob Paradise, and he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989. (...)Read the rest of Penguins History: Bob Paradise...

Mike Lange, rented mules and fried chicken

Legendary Pittsburgh Penguins announcer Mike Lange is someone I wish we could feature more on this website.  His unique, gravelly, enthusiastic calls are like nobody else in the business.  (SCRATCH MY BACK WITH A HACKSAW being my personal favorite)  Last night, the Pens beat the Maple Leafs 3-1 with all 3 goals coming in the 3rd period.  For Pascal Dupuis' game winner with...

Penguins Have Seen This Fish Before

Looks familiar, doesn't it? As another spring is (barely) inching closer by the day, the Penguins are on yet another roll, winners of nine straight.  The Pens' first line of Kunitz/Crosby/Dupuis are playing out of their minds.  Even their defense, which was much maligned not very long ago, is playing much, much better. And all this recently without Evgeni Malkin. ...

Bruins Suffer ‘Steel City Stumble’ Against Penguins Despite Strong Effort Against Tough Foe (Video)

The Bruins faced a tough test against the Penguins on Sunday. Unfortunately, they didn’t quite make the grade. Despite a strong effort and a late push to even things up, Boston couldn’t find a way to break through against a stingy Pittsburgh defense. Tomas Vokoun made 31 saves in a strong performance, Sidney Crosby scored a goal and generally, the Penguins just looked better...

Rangers-Penguins Preview

While many expected a tight race in the Atlantic Division, Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins appear to be head and shoulders above the competition. That shouldn't come as much of a surprise to the New York Rangers. Hoping to stay unbeaten in March, Pittsburgh tries for a seventh consecutive victory over New York as these division rivals square off in a matinee showdown...

Penguins vs Bruins: Beasts of the East

[caption id="attachment_58714" align="alignnone" width="620"] The Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins are the Beasts of the East right now.[/caption]     It's hard to imagine a better matchup to have than the Pittsburgh Penguins taking on the Boston Bruins. Why? Because both these teams are displaying why they are at the top of the Eastern Conference...

Keys To The Game Vs. Pittsburgh

The Bruins and Penguins are going head to head for the second time in four games. The Bruins had a 2-0 lead in the third period which they blew within the final 10 minutes of the period. This time the game is more even matched then last though. The Bruins were coming off of a game against Ottawa the night before and had to battle back from a 2-0 defecit themselves to beat the Senators...

Rangers 0, Penguins 3

The Rangers fell to the Pittsburgh Penguins today by the score of 3-0. For a box score, click here. Observations: Little to no positives to take away from today's game... looked like a typical Rangers-Pens game to me.  If not for Hank, the Rangers are probably looking at a 4-0 deficit after one and possibly Glen Sather working the phones in a room somewhere, if...

Quick Cap: Pens roll over Rangers 3-0.

The Pens got goals from Bennett, TK, and Dupes. Marc-Andre Fleury put up his 23rd career shutout, and the Pens beat the struggling Rangers. They have now won eight straight games. Rick Nash. LOL.
